N. GarrettTrophy Shipment question
Just got an email about an hour ago (from Coppersmith in Atlanta, GA) that my trophy shipment from Tanzania is finished and ready to be released to my taxidermist.
Final bill is $1900.
Shipment includes large hippo skull, buffalo skull, waterbuck, warthog, impala, hartebeast, and caped reedbuck (nice reedbuck).
That price seems a little high.
How does that compare to what you've paid?
The personel at Coppersmith were easy to deal with all the way..very friendly and let me know how it was going as the shipment was processed.
Thanks,
Garrett

bo-n-aroIf the last five in your list are shoulder mounts, that sounds about right..... high but about right. If they are capes and horns... high! Shipping I believe is based more on size than weigt and shoulde mounts will take up more room than the skins and horns.
From what I understand, shipments out of Taqnzania will be higher than say South Africa.

Magnum Hunter1I just got an estimate on my shipment from Zim for two buff horns and capes and a baboon skull and it was $1700. The price is ridiculous but what does one do. Its robbery. In 2003 I had nine animals, capes and skulls and it was $642. I am going to try to work out some kind of deal with the shipping spelled out when I go again. I got blindsided on this one thinking it would be like my first trip. I did not use Coppersmith the first time around. I was waiting for a sea freight quote and got an email that since they had not received payment yet, that they were going to go ahead and ship airfreight and Coppersmith would bill me. Still waiting for the seafreight quote! I got hit twice for the documentation in Zim, veterinary charges etc. Its all BS and a way to get money from you. Ok I'll stop ranting.

Cazador humildeShipment charges seem to go up exponentially each year. I'm headed to Zim in 3 weeks and you guys have done gone and got me worried. As you say, Coppersmith is always beyond professional and polite, but with so many middlemen involved after you leave your hunt, I really wish you could put your finger on where the increases occur. The cynic in me says he's starting to understand the "we're moving and growing" notice I received from Coppersmith - Dallas in the mail a while back.

Balla BallaDear AR hunter guests //
I understand what you are saying, it is becoming one of the main area's of concern to hunt Africa to get your trophies sent back home at a reasonable price. The are many facits including the AIRFTEIGHT costs and other miscellaneous ...
To cut a long stort short
Some guests might want to contact
Powers Expiditers in USA and sound them out as it may be they could be of assistance
If you do contact them just mention out of courtesy that (Peter Bird from Balla-Balla Safaris) referred you.
I am interested to know if they are competitive within Africa to get your trophies back home to USA in particualar
Cheers, Peter

smarterthanuIn passing judgement I could help a lot more if there was a breakdown of charges or an invoice given.

L. David KeithGarrett, you are at their mercy. Unless you have someone (Customs Broker) that will get on the phone and chew some rear, they usually charge what they like, but your price is about right coming from Tanz. You can state you want sea freight (less than air by about 40%) and if you drive to Atlanta and pick it up you'll save a little more. Watch out for ground transportation once it's here. From your post I take it your trophies are coming in raw salted. Who's your Taxidermist? Depends on what your plans are as to assistance from them. LDK

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

Magnum Hunter1It's those $250 and $270 charges, yes twice, for "documentation". Come on. There has got to be a way to figure the cost beforehand. Its a hostage situation. Its a shame you can't hold the outfitters last $2000 in an escrow account until you get your trophies. I bet that would make a world of difference on getting them back in a timely manner and reasonbly priced. If it costs more than the agreed upon price, it comes out of the $2000 in escrow. OK, I'm dreaming.
