Royce, I highly recommend you do it with a reputable tannery in Africa. Some do excellent work and very reasonable prices. The tan is good and much cheaper to ship home. Have your leather work done here, but your dye and tan done over there. Our guys (Taxidermists) are some of the best in the world, but most will tell you "have it tanned there." I've just taken pics of a big bull Ele a friend of my took last year. During the tanning process (here) the upper dermis started to come off. It "ain't pretty" as they say. It will now take a lot of work to repair. Good hunting, LDK

The skins aren't worth much in Zim at least. I looked into selling one 2 years ago and they don't bring much. Just a couple of hundred I believe. I gave mine to my PH and I think he probably had it tanned on halfs. I saw some beautiful guncases, breifcases, and other goods made by a small company in Bulawayo. They did a beautiful tan soft and flexible and they dyed some really pretty colors.

Royce, sorry I didn't really answer your question the first time, but if you do a search on "Taxidermists" you should come up with many of them. Check their price list. You'll see a wide difference in pricing, but I would venture to say $25 per square foot would be in the ballpark for US tanning. LDK

I know where there are several untanned panels here in the US at a taxidermy shop. The owner has just left them there and the taxidermist is trying to get rid of them.

Does anyone know what the requlations would be on buying them from the owner and having them tanned here? Are there US of CITES prohibitions on selling legally taken elephant leather?

Use Enough Gun
Not only may you have Cites problems, but the cost of tanning that ele hide here in the U.S. would be fairly expensive I believe.

I would love to have a small piece of tanned ele that was shaved down to make a journal cover. I wasn't able to bring any of my ele home and that would be just perfect...especially since the dog ate my African journal cover of that trip.

I'll send you a piece of leather. Tell me how big.

And you can sell the leather here in the US. Just include a copy of the CITES permit with it and everyone's butt is covered.

To me, it is just too expensive to get tanned in Zim much less here in the US. Now that Zim can export and the US import, it is near worthless. And by the time you pay to get it tanned, shipped here and pay the expeditor, yikes it's expensive. Unless you just want it anyway!

You have it bad, don't you?!

One time in Chewore, I asked another hunter that was there how many trips he had made to Africa. He told me eleven. Damn, I was envious.

You act surprised? Even though we are a generation apart, we have common interests...I'm just not as grouchy as you are but give me some more time and we'll see what happens. dancing

You knew I was serious about Africa years ago when we first met.

I don't recall the cost but I was happy with the work http://specialtyleather.com/ did.

They did what they said they would do and stuck to the price they quoted.
