Gentlemen,

GeorgeS asked me to post this question on this board.
I built a 375 weatherby a few years back on a 375 H&H stainless model 70 platform.
The particular rifle shoots factory loads great into 1" or less at 100 yrds. I feel very confident shooting this load however it contains a 300 gr Nosler partition and this rifle chronos these loads at an honest 2800 FPS (Oehler 35).
I feel very confident I can put this bullet where I want. I have shot coyotes with it at close to 200 yards (It kills them!).
I realize I will have to reload in order to obtain some (solid) loads which is no issue. I have already posted on the reloading board for some insight on that subject.
How is the 300 gr Nosler Partition on Buffalo at 2800 fps at the muzzle? I realize the Swift or triple shock are most often mentioned for this work. I have sectioned these noslers along their axis and noted the 338 and up offerings are much heavier built than 30 caliber and below.

Seems to me the fact that the Nosler sheds most of the material fwd of the partition when driven to very high velocities argues against it when compared to the A frame and triple shock. The A frame is a bit tougher bullet and the bonding serves you well @ higher velocities with higher retained bullet wt. In smaller calibers (30. cal etc.)the triple shock exit wounds tend to be too small to suit me. However, once you reach .375 or greater the expansion seems much improved and the wound channels seem straighter. For me the triple shok obviates the need for a mixture of softs and solids. You are using more speed than I and in that situation the triple shok is even more desirable. JMO they are all good.

At .375 Wby. Mag. velocities, there are better bullets for cape buffalo than the Nosler Partition, and I would use one if I were you.

When used on buffalo, I have seen the Nosler Partition seriously stressed at .375 H&H Mag. velocities of 2,500 fps or thereabouts.

As Adrian says, the Swift A-Frame or Barnes TSX would be better bullets.

IMHO, the Northfork would also be a better bullet for buffalo.

Thank you;
It is back to the loading bench!
I have 3 rifles better suited for this job; 416 Rem (Mod 70), 458 Lott (CZ 550) and a 470 Nitro (Heym 88 safari).
The 375 is just so accurate and it is a knock about (stainless / fiberglass).

That's cookin' along pretty good for a .300 grain bullet. I too doubt the Nosler would hold up (or many other soft's for that matter). I'd just go with one of your very adequate "alternates" on buff.

I would take your .375 Weatherby. I killed my buffalo with a 300 grain Nosler Partition with one shot. I used my .375 H&H Mag. loaded at 2550 FPS. I would take the gun that I shoot the best with.
