I now have a nasty mental picture of you dancing around your trophy room to the beat of "You can Swiff it, swiff it good..", duster in hand....

Seriously though, this is a good tip...I have used them on my mounts and hides a few times now. Kicks butt on trying to be careful with a vacuum!!

Cheers,
Canuck

I feel a bit odd posting this as I don't really want to come off as a "suzy homemaker" however I have a lot of taxidermy and the dust at times makes the mounts look old and nasty.

My wife was watching a show on TLC the other day and saw this commercial for a "Swifer Duster" She mentioed it might be a good idea to try it and see if the mounts could be cleaned easier with it.

She bought one this weekend and I tried it out. Well I have about 20 plus shoulder mounts and several lifesize mounts too. The Swifer 3' long dusting wand with it's magnetic static dust pad cleaned the dust way better then a vaccuum and in no time my taxidermy looked as if it were just put into the room brand new.

I found that I should do the delicate Nyala and deer mounts first and then the others with the Cape Buffalos and wild boars last. The Buffalo and pigs have tough hide and hair with cannot be ruined from simple dusting. The static clinging dust pad works best when fresh and the most delicate mounts should be done first.

Over all it took me no time to do the animals and will be faster in the future because I will not let them get as dusty with the new found easy cleaning method!

Thanks for the tip. I'll give them a try this weekend. By the way, you weren't wearing that cute little French Maid outfit were you?

Is this it?

I'm new to having trophies in the house so any good tips on cleaning are appreciated! I was wondering what would be the best way to dust them.

BFaucett,

Those are the smaller version. Original post was talking about the longer (3 foot long) version. I have used the shorter ones you posted pic of for awhile, and they work great! I would stay away from any scented or "lemon-fresh" ones.

JJ,

I don't find you to be any kind of a SUZY anything. Cleaning mounts is a pain so anything that works is good news to me. Thanks for the tip.

Regards,

Mark

I work for a restoration company and have cleaned or dusted many clients mounts. Often compressed air is used, like you would clean a computer or electrical device, also swiffer type pads.Another trick is to cover the end hose on a vaccum cleaner to reduce the air flow speed, as to not suck the hair out. Pipe cleaners and Q tip swabs are used around the eyes, mouths ,nose etc. Most important take your time, I wipe individual eye lashes ,browes, whiskers, etc. Good Luck Rug
