Zimbabwe signs wildlife conservation partnership with ifaw
(Harare, Zimbabwe – 30 September 2019) – The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) today announced a ground-breaking partnership to enhance wildlife conservation in key protected areas in the country. The international non-governmental organisation and ZimParks will be working together in the Hwange-Matetsi ecosystem covering the iconic Hwange National Park, Zambezi NP and Victoria Falls NP, a designated UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site and adjoining community areas.
“This historic conservation partnership between IFAW and ZimParks represents a fundamental step for the advancement of wildlife conservation in Zimbabwe, a nation with striking species richness which has ascribed tremendous importance to its tradition of conservation,” said Azzedine Downes, President and CEO of IFAW. “By both including and ultimately empowering local communities within the critical dialogue of conservation, together we are laying the groundwork for long-term, sustainable management of this key geographical area which houses some of the world’s most abundant wildlife and natural resources.”
The new partnership spans a variety of conservation objectives that will include to the development of on-the-ground law enforcement capacity to protect wildlife populations from poaching and working with communities to prevent human-wildlife conflict.
“We prefer to take a practical, solutions-based approach to ensure that humans and wildlife are able to live harmoniously. This includes promoting a landscape approach to develop management , land use and alternative livelihood strategies that secure key habitats and enhance connectivity of critical elephant populations in the wild,” said Jimmiel Mandima, IFAW’s Deputy Vice President for Conservation at a ceremony held in Harare, Zimbabwe.
IFAW recently appointed Phillip Tapera Kuvawoga, as Programme Director for Landscape Conservation. Kuvawoga, a Zimbabwean national, works from Harare, and will focus on leading IFAW’s global landscape conservation work and, manage the implementation of on the ground projects, including but not limited to habitat security, community livelihood interventions and research.
IFAW works in more than 40 countries, to rescue and protect animals and their habitats, for a world where animals and people can thrive together.

Larry, If it were African Parks...I would feel differently. But...IFAW is vehemently anti-hunting and well funded. My opinion is not good.

The ONLY reason IFAW exists is to print money. Check out their IRS990 form. Their CEO, with his degree in French Linguistics, pays himself over a grand a day to got to cocktail parties, whilst telling the developing world how to manage their wildlife.
All they want is to buy themselves into a position of influence, whereby they can drive policy. Which means they can then go back to their zombified donor base and cry "See what we've done - donate now!" to make even more money.
They are all about working with bureaucrats in capitol cities to achieve this, and have no interest in rural communities or what is really best for wildlife.
When I asked a senior Parks manager this morning why the authority sold it's soul to the devil, the response was "Never attended the meeting". I am NOT saying this to cast aspersions on him. I have known him for a quarter of a century and he is out of the mould that believes that "meetings are a practical alternative to work", and he spends his time doing the real job. I say this as an illustration of how IFAW works: the top brass will have been given some shiny trinkets, and most of the authority may not know it's happened.

It is also VERY significant that this story is only - so far - on IFAW's website, which is primarily directed at First World folks; as of this morning I could find no local news stories about it. Which looks to me like IFAW is trying to hide something.

Could you elaborate? Some of us have no clue what you mean.
Larry, I think he means with IFAW's anti hunting bias, anyone holding hunting rights in those concessions, which is where the agreement is focused, is likely to loose them.

Pardon me Mr. Shores, did not see this until now.
This is the play:
The Danckwerts are a well known family in Zim.
IFAW are already heavily involved with the Danckwerts and Panda Masuie Forest Area, which they took away from the hunters. Cock and bull story about rehabilitating orphan elephants in order to raise funds. Their aim is to take over Woodlands, and all the Matetsi hunting blocks in order to create one huge "private" game reserve/park.

Thank you.
I am glad to hear you were not referring to the Duckworths which is who I thought you were talking about.
This is happening throughout the continent. The anti-hunting organizations are aligning themselves with politicians and parks and are influencing the decision makers. In the past they simply bribed officials to get their way, however, that is getting increasingly easier to track. So now they resort to "investments" and employment deals which are more difficult to find. If you want to get your agenda approved, hire the politician's family and friends. The money and graft will flow into the proper hands to ensure your voice is heard.
At the end of the day, the anti-hunting movement is highly organized, motivated and most of all, well funded. It's not a bunch of brainwashed clowns spraying fake blood on buildings or tying up traffic in the streets. They're focused and very sophisticated in their influence peddling and they're winning time and time again.
I hate to say we don't stand a chance against them, but in the final analysis... we really don't. We are not organized, we don't bribe politicians, we don't have a unified voice, and the money we spend on hunting is doing very little when it comes to buying influence. Sucks, but that's reality.
