Is a .250 Savage legal for shooting for a culling type hunt? In either Namibia or SA?
By someone not a resident? I saw in Namibia's
hunting regs that the minimum caliber is 7mm.
But is that for trophy hunting or game shooting period?

ChrisTroskieThe .250 is legal for hunting in SA. I would not recommend it for regular plains game hunting (save varmint hunting) but for culling (i.e. brain shots) in the hands of an experienced hunter who knows how to shoot it, it is perfect.

Michael RobinsonI know that the NAPHA website indicates that 7mm is the smallest caliber permitted in Namibia, but that is incorrect.
I don't have the minimums handy, but the key factor relative to calibers permitted for the various classes of game is the muzzle energy they produce, measured in joules.
I have used a .25-06 for small plains game in Namibia (steenbok and springbok) and I met a game rancher there who regularly uses a .243, even on gemsbok, which he head shoots to avoid wasting meat.

L. David KeithI use a .223 (5.56mm) pushing a 60 grain Nosler Partition on small to medium PG. Mainly for the simple reason of not destroying the cape/skin. It puts a small diameter hole in anything from Steenbok to Bontebok. Doesn't ruin any meat if you pick your shots. Most animals drop in their tracks, but I've used this caliber since the early 1970s and know my rifle well. A well constructed bullet in .250 should be fine on small to medium PG. I would avoid risky shots or anything larger than Impala. Keep this simple thought in mind: "If I wound an animal; I pay for it." Seems to work for me.

MacD37You never hear folks talk abou it with client hunters, but there are a lot of 243 Win rifle in a daily use in RSA, and Namibia, with good results, even on some of the larger plains game!
Personally though I'd far rather use something like a 280 Rem, to 9.3X62 for a plains game hunt, that far from home, and with that much cost if wounded , and lost game that must be paid for whether you find him or not!
