I purchased this fine old FN Safari grade, 1965 Browning .375 in Houston about 15 years ago. The story from the seller was that he had been contacted to sell the guns of a PH that was retiring to Belize. The seller said he was expecting to receive a letter from the PH listing a bit of history for each rifle but hadn't received it yet. He knew this one had spent the better part of 15 years in Africa as a loner for clients that hadn't brought a "heavy". He assured me he would forward the info to me when he got it. Well "buy the horse, not the story" right? A month or so later I received an envelope from the seller and inside was the envelope and letter from the PH!!! It identified this rifle by make model and serial #. He said this one and a .458 just like it were left by a client in appreciation for a hunt (don't know if they were new at the time). He said this .375 was indeed used as a loner and had taken 3 elephant, many Buff and literally tons of other targets of opportunity. What a fabulous piece of provenance. Now here is the "bug in the butter"------------in a flooded house the letter and receipt were lost! This 67 year old mind can't recall a bit of the specifics of the info. I know this is a long shot but if this story rings a bell with anyone I would more that pleased to hear from them. This old soldier is a shooter! I have hunted with an almost identical, but scoped, .30-06 since 1969 and the .375 feels very familiar. Thanks all, I'm new here but believe it or not I looked over every post in African Hunting, Big Bores and Gunsmithing before posting this. 470NE Searcy 9.3X74r Johann Springer | ||

Good luck in making the contact you're looking for. I inherited a rifle just about like that one from Dad. It's a FN Mauser made in Belgium in 1961 I believe, also chambered for .375H&H. He shot a bull moose and caribou in AK in '67, and either that fall or the next a bull elk here in CO. Other than maybe another 100 or so rnds at paper and prairie dogs it's nearly fresh yet. It does have a Kahles 4x w/fence post reticle. Wish you well and many thanks for sharing the story and pictures. George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!"
