Hi Nick Suspect that current Kynock ammo using woodleighs would be ok. The only frontal shots that I have seen were with 1960's vintage Kynock ammo. Bullets had very thin guilding metal jackets. The 550grn mono's I saw used went right through on a side brain, And from arse to recovered against the sternum on a fleeing bull. For buff with old Kynock solids or modern softs that .505 is a dream.

I am currently shooting 450 grain X bullets from the 458Lott @ 2300 fps and it has never failed to decide matters on anything when hit right. To date I have recoverd only about 4 or maybe 6 bullets. There may have been more we missed inside some big animal but the majority have blown right on through. Just to show that not everything is a guarantee in life, one bullet I recovered was from a head shot Croc that was swimming under "maybe" a couple feet of water after being wounded by my hunter. I drilled him right clean into the center of his noggin from about 40-50 yards and eneded the show. I was stunned to find that bullet inside the crocks head! After seeing those bullets exit far bigger game having a croc's head hold onto one was a big surprize. I think the water penetration had something to do with it though.

Ray, no argument. I simply state that, if one were to select long-for-caliber bullets and fire them at suitable velocity, the advantages of caliber would hold. The SD of 570/600 grain .505/.510 bullets run just as sweet as those of the .416/.404 and when fired at good velocity, will deliver the necessary penetration. I pick no favorites, just saying that if one choses rightly, the bigger bores maintain advantages, for those willing to pay the price. I've never been quite sure if the conceptual 525/535 grain bullets for the Gibbs/Jefferys were concessions to recoil or to the powders of the time or both but today, they are clearly short-for-caliber in terms of case capacity.
