Rottweil Shot Shell Availability in South Africa

I'm planning a wing shooting hunt in South Africa in May 2015 (guinea fowl francolin, et. al.)

Are Rottweil shot shells available in the Johannesburg - Limpopo areas?

I'd like to start this shot shell purchase process early in conjunction with my PH/Owner ie. determining quantity required for planned hunt, costs, purchase by my PH/Owner especially if quantity of sells is limited (maybe make multiple purchase over the next year), give vendor sufficient time to order specific product (RWS Silver Selection shot shells, #4 shot, 12gauge, 2 3/4").

Suggest you google The Powderkeg a fine gunshop in one of Joburg's western suburbs. Call them and ask...

Bolt shooter,

I have never seen Rottweil shells in any real numbers. We shoot Eley shells down there which are excellently quality. Hull used to be available but there were some import issues.

Why specifically Rotweill?

Fallow Buck,

Thanks for the info.

I am looking for nickel plated shot; RWS (Rottweil) has this type product and appears to be a premium shell. If they are available (within reasonable costs and acquisition without too much trouble I'd like to use them.

Boltshooter I have never seen those shells over here.

The only other place that may have them would be in Pretoria which is on the way to Limpopo. Unfortunately it seems like they are not advertising ammunition (other than for reloading) so I will call them in a couple hours to find out if they have.

Last time I bought shotgun shells it was imported from Argentina.

Rottweil shells are like hens teeth. If you find they will be in limited numbers and shot sizes.

I shoot Eley and Diana and when they are available a local brand called Pointer.

The Eley and Diana I see no difference in and the pointers you just have to watch that you are getting even powder burn, have seen some slugs with clumped powder bounce off a pig.

What are you shooting and where? there are very few places in SA where you are going to shoot that much number 4's that you would need more than 4 cases of ammo etc which is easily bought in the gunshops.

Good luck
Ian

In my experience a lot better quality than Eley.

Especially the high power and magnum variety.

Those mythical shells of far off lands. If we could get any of that sort of quality ammo I would give my left nut for it.
We are lucky if we get some SAGA slugs on the odd occasion.
Generally you ask for high power shells and the gunshop owner will proudly hand you a box of anaemic S&B LG and tell you you could shoot a T-Rex with it.

I would like to suggest that you contact Kevin Healey. He is a wing-shooting specialist and gunshop owner, could most likely get you what you want in the volumes you require.

Nope. Safari and Outdoor in Pretoria do not stock it.

They have Diana in limited numbers but have sufficient stock in Fiocchi # 4, 5 and 6.

They have lots of Sellier & Bellot in SG, SSG and AAA if you wanted to shoot anything in particular.

Bear in mind Cape Town is a couple weeks away from Johannesburg on horseback and shipping will significantly add to an already inflated ammunition price.

Sorry about that.

Could not agree more, Saeed.

Hull is MILES ahead of Eley in almost every respect, which is loaded in Spain these days anyway, and the Hull import problems have been sorted out years ago. In fact, the Hull guys import twice as much shotgun ammo into SA as almost anyone else, including Eley.

It's fantastic quality across the board, recoils less, gives better patterns in my guns and leaves a much cleaner bore after firing. It's also very reasonably priced compared to almost anything else, Eley included.

Thanks Pieter Kriel,

I appreciate your effort.

jvw375,

You state "Hull is MILES ahead". Where can I direct my PH to get those shells in South Africa?

Contact Entramarc in Johannesburg. The guy to speak to is Atholl Murray and he can be reached at atholl(at)entramarc.co.za. They usually have decent levels of stock.

I have another e-mail address for him as well. It's amurray(at)entramarc.co.za.

One of the two should work.

I followed the suggestion made by Ian, and called Kevin Healy. They cannot, right now supply Rotweil, but they will find out and "come back to me". Then I'll be glad to share the results.

In good hunting.

Men,

Thank you for your efforts in getting high quality shotshells .

Your efforts with personal phone calls and inquiries is confirming my thought that good, high quality shells would be a good deal for the wing shooting guys & gals . I was hoping that the PH's in Africa would provide some information and YOU DID.

Your dealer contact recommendations are helpful. I've sent email to Entramarc (doesn't appear to be too far from Johannesburg airport) stocks Hull Cartridge products and within a reasonable time frame are available.

Hunting The Box H get ready to give up your "left nut" (see his post above) because I hope we are about to have ready access to good quality ammo

Rottweil shotshell products are scarce so far.

Hunters don't let these guys down if they get the good stuff by complaining about the price of shells; a couple of bucks for quality ammo can only add to your enjoyment.

Thanks everyone
