My gun travel case is about 48"-50" long. Was looking at another case that was about 56" long.

Is there a limit on length of checked baggage on airlines like Delta, Air Namibia, etc.? Can't seem to find it online.

Ever had problems with length of your cases?

Took 2 Tuff Paks on Lufthansa and Air Namibia this past May. I think about 54" long, and there were no issues. Could have gotten by with one pack if they would have allowed ammo and rifle in the same case. I ended up just packing a lot of extra stuff that was light but bulky just to take up the room.

Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

Two of us went to Argentina this OCT packed in Tuffpaks via AA and no problems either in country or the long hauls.
Have been to Namibia, RSA (took 3 tuffpaks on this trip) and TZ with no problems with the Tuffpaks.

On my last Safari, flying out of DFW a fella was behind me in line with a long aluminium case.

The next morning when boarding at Dullus for J'oberg, I saw the same fella with a black plastic case.

I asked him what happened to his aluminium case. He told me that at DFW they told him it was too long.

My wife and I had 2 regular Tuffpaks and a take down Tuffpak and had no problems.

Most airlines specify a maximum luggage size based on length+height+depth - I think with Delta, this measurement (sum, actually) amounts to 62" (look on http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/baggage/baggage_allowance/index.jsp). If the case does not exceed that number, then it is in principle allowed. Often, the luggage is not tested, though in principle it could be. Delta allows bags up to a max of 80" for an extra fee of $100...

If your guncase is 45-56" long, you are bound to be either close to or even over the max. That *could* spell trouble. It is rare that gun cases present a problem, though.

If one is flying with skiis then they will be over the length limit and I have never heard of a skier being charged for excessive length. But hunter are different -- I guess in the eyes of the public.
