What Do You Carry In Your Daysack?

It seems most folks take along a bag or small rucksack while they hunt in Africa.

I was just curious what odds and ends folks put in it and whether they take it along on the actual hunt or leave it in the vehicle..

Regards,

Pete

I never took a daysack or anything similar. I carry whatever extras I think I might need in my pocket or hang it on my belt.

Survival Kit contents check: (Slightly modified from Major T.J. Kong's kit).

In it you will find:

1. One .45 caliber automatic.
2. Two boxes of ammunition.
3. Four days concentrated emergency rations.
4. One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills.
5. One miniature combination Swahili phrase book and Bible.
6. One hundred dollars in cash.
7. One hundred dollars in gold.
8. Nine packs of chewing gum.
9. One issue of prophylactics.
10. Three lipsticks.
11. Three pairs of nylon stockings.

Shoot, a fellah could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff . . . .

Pretty much the same be it Africa, the Rockies or the Tundra:

A small skinning knife.
50" of para cord
A pedzel head light
A flashing red runner light(2" diameter)
A chemical light stick - 12 hr.
GPS
compass
Matches
An ace bandage & a 4x4 sterile gause
A few power bars & trail mix, a few packs of sugar.
Toilet paper
A Survival poncho
Two liters of water
Some type of water filtration - bootle, straw or pills.
Camera

I wear a big bore hand gun.

I try to carry as little as I can. I can't seem to go out with less than this.

I forgot....When out alone for elk or when I was hunting caribou. I drop my pack & if needed any pack frame hunt an area. I have a 10' pcs. of f'ag tape rolled up on the pack. That I can hang in a tree, If needed.

With a guide & a vechicle I'd leave it there.

Either way I might stuff a few iteams in my pockets depending what I might think I'll need.

As you know I haven't been but you can bet your bottom dollar that the one time you leave it you will need it!

Water, fleece, first aid kit, camera and pull through would be in mine.

If it doesn't fit on my belt (ammo & mini camera), it stays in the car.

This thread does bring up a humorous point - you can always spot the new hunters in the Jo’burg airport. They are sporting their “Out of Africa†hunting hat, with hunting jacket, zip-out long pants, new boots, new gun case, two if not three gear bags all for 7 days of hunting. They look like a walking Cabela’s catalogue.

After a few hunts, I turned into a minimalist. I take less and less each trip. In the field I take some water, binos, and ammo. I leave the sat phones, emergency satellite locator beacon, signal flairs, GPS, game finder, laser range finder, and night vision goggles at home where they belong.
