The best way to avoid/deal with ticks is to spray your clothing & shoes with Bayticol and every couple of days, substitute your shower gel/soap for a dog tick and flea shampoo.

With mosquitos, a good repellant and sensible clothing help dramatically. If they're a real pain in the arse at night a mosquito net is a Godsend...... as is air con and a can of Doom..... if you don't have air con at home, fly screen the windows.

As Steve said, dog shampoo for ticks and for mosquitos try using Aquafresh mouthwash by spaying it all around you where you sit...

Peaceful sleep
And a mosquito net, only sure fire way I know to keep mosquitos off humans.

Large quantities of Gin and Tonic also has its merits, you will feel the mosquito bites less as the evening progresses.

Pepper ticks, wipe parafin on your legs from the knee down.
I found bayticol gives me a headache so stopped using it.
One thing that does work well is to mix powdered garlic in water and sponge it onto your legs, we use that for the trails horses here in Hluhluwe. I would however recommend sticking with peaceful sleep as the wife will not like the garlic much.
Good luck

The trick with tsetse is to catch them, pull a wing off and then drop them into someone's pocket, down their neck or arse crack without them noticing........

Funny as hell!

Strange as it sounds, Avon Skin So Soft works great for me! I just smear it all over my face, neck, arms and ankles every day, and no bug bites all day. It has worked for buff hunts in African, water buffalo in the Northern Territory, and bantang hunts in Coburg. Don't know why it works, but somebody told me to try it and it did!

Avon Skin-So-Soft now comes with an insect repellent. Works fairly good and some say it keeps the Tsetse flies away. I get it locally. Another good idea is to take Vitamin B-1 everyday. As for ticks, nothing available here in the States will kill any better than Duranon Permanone...period.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

I used the Avon skin so soft with the Picardin (sp)this year in the Selous and believe me it works on bugs especially TSETSE's. I have used deet and other repellants multiple apps, but the AVON one application did the job. If you find a Avon store the spray is much cheaper then on line. PVT said it has beaten any repellant he has used by far. I purchased for him 5 spray bottles (white) and one pack of toweletts.

Living by the river every evening a small smokey fire.

I remember when I was a kid, the Avon lady used to come by and visit my mother on a regular basis with her little bag of samples. I don't know if they still have Avon ladies? Had to order mine on line from the internet.

No mate,

I damaged my neck when I ran out into the middle of the road and then stopped to lick my balls..... then a truck hit me! Wink

More seriously,

In the old days when cars had steel hub caps, every truck had one on the roof rack or in the load bed and we always used to keep a couple of dried elephant turds smoldering away. Used to keep the tsetse flies away a treat.

It's also a good tip to use whenever you stop for lunch in a not so perfect area or if you need to wait a while for the truck to arrive.
