450/400Ivory - You Guess The Weight
These are pictures of ivory that my wife's late uncle took. I'll provide details of the ivory and when/where it was taken. You guess the weight and country of origin before I tell you the real weight and country.
This me standing next to the right tusk. Base circumference is approximately 18". I am 6'3" and 235 lbs for reference.
The top of my hand is 8'.
Inside view of left tusk.
Inside view of right tusk.
Outside view of right tusk.
Oustide view of left tusk.

JPKKenya. 80lbs on the left tusk and 70 on the right. The right is much shorter and was the ele's working tusk, but it is thicker too and holds its diameter while the left tusk tapers more quickly.
My guess, worth what you paid for it!

JBrownI would guess 72 lbs each, from Kenya(or Tanzania).
The left tusk must be close to 7ft long on the outside of the curve. It is hard to guess the weight because I am used to the thicker tusks from Zim that tend to taper and have large nerve cavities.
You could say these tusks carry their weight out towards the tip. And I think the shorter right tusk does. But the other tusk though longer, is quite thin overall.

450/400Fair is fair. The right tusk is about 5' to the lip line and the right 6'. The left has a much deeper curve.

450/400That's the point! I concocted this idea after seeing folks speculate on ivory weight whenever somebody posts a picture and doesn't provide the weight.
I thought it would be fun to see how who could get it right. I should have asked the pros to hold their votes! Keep them coming. This won't long, I promise!

Andrew McLarenBig enough for me to look at them as "my trophy tusks". In my book that is all that counts.
I'm not gouing to venture a guess at all. Wonder how some guesses would have been different if a lot of 'old Pros' all intentionally posted 20 lb heavier [or lighter]than what they really thought?
In good hunting.

GarByIvan is a show-off.

I'm sticking to designing buildings....it's obvious I can't guess ivory weight. On the other hand, I guessed a bit low, so the hunter would have been excited as I would have been conservative!
