If you would like, I will give you the $650 and you can buy any rifle you want.
Needless to say I think very highly of the Win. '70 and 375 is about as deadly as you might want. If you want a smaller rifle we could trade for a 338 win mag on a Ruger 77 or a 338 rum on a Rem. 700 or any number of lever actions or you name it.
Actually I think you have a very first class rifle on your hands and should snatch it up or at lease send me the information and let me buy it.

You might want to clarify if this is a "classic" action and not a push feed. I don't want to start a CRF debate, but it does affect the value.

The Model 70 in .375 H&H is the first rifle I bought before my first African safari and it is still my workhorse rifle. Have a good riflesmith do a trigger job, bed the action, check the crown, check the floorplate release (to assure against unforseen floorplate opening) and have him mount your scope. With this done you will have the best price/quality ratio African hunting rifle I think you can find.

Hi Whtailtalker

GO, GO, GO, ! Like said the other gentleman Jump on it PDQ ! at 650 $ it is a real bargain if the gun is OK . I Europe it would be double that price . For Africa as, said the other Gent from Rambouillet it is a real workhorse . I love the .375 HH but mine is a Brno ZKK602 "prepared" by Eric Briano one of our best gunsmith in Paris area. The cartridge is very flexible, easy to reload and soft on the action, tough on game .

Buy it at once, great price. Last year bought one for my safari, paid $1100. Took it to my gunsmith and had it glass-bedded. It shoots great, very accurate, feeds flawlessly, groups at 1" at 100 yards.

I paid about $1K for mine (LH). Shot cloverleafs out of the box at 100 yards. I have no complaints.

There are model 70s and there are Mod 70s...you could not give me the post 64 push feed rifle...

However there is no better rifle than a pre 64 Winchester or one of the newer controlled feed Model 70s, unless it is a model 98 Mauser, which I may prefer to the M-70, but school is still out on that and has been for many years.

This was bothering me a bit so I finally looked them both up.

Model 70 Classic Stainless 375H&H MSRP$943

Walmart Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless 375H&H $699.94

Unless the pictures are wrong at the Walmart site, this looks like a "Walmart Special" version -- no open sights. I cannot tell if it is the same stock or if there are other differences. There are larger pictures available at bth places but I did not post them here.

Maybe it is just as good and $250 less than the MSRP of the version on the Winchester site, but I guess I would have to compare them side-by side to be sure.

The Wal Mart site appears to use the standard Win 70 classic synthetic pics from Winchester website.

only the 375 has sights. Notice in the description that it says "open rifle sights". In small gun shops, you can usually be quoted low $700's range for synthetic. $850 or so for the wood version.

Thanks for the information. I have read many reports that Walmart uses lower-priced versions of standard rifles to get the price down, but I have no personal experience with it. Sounds like that may not be the case at all, at least here.

Do not believe that weight. It is more like 8.25 lbs. than 7.25 lbs..

That's a good entry-level price for which you have fundamentally acquired a barreled-action. That horrible injection-moulded stock that Winchester provides is an abomination that needs to be replaced with a better handle from McMillan or Borden. Also, the open sights are really cheesy (the rear sight is held on by ONE dinky screw!), and should be replaced as well. The trigger/safety system will need to be reworked, and you may need to have the fedding system tweeked a little as well. I would also have a stronger floorplate latch spring installed as well to ensure that your cartridge won't dump out on the ground at "High Noon". All of a sudden that $650 price has at least doubled......

Quite honestly, unless you're going to confine your hunting to coastal brown bears, I think most .375s are too blinking heavy to carry up the mountain after interior grizzlies. I've done it, and never again. The .338 Win. is a better option for bears in my opinion.....

Here's another good option, a synthetic stocked Interarms Whitworth 375 with rings for $600:

Last month, wholesale cost on the 375 Classic Synthetic was $675, so it is entirely possible that Wal-Mart is selling them for $700.

Lord only knows what they are paying for them.

I suspect the picture is generic, not specific to the caliber, since the 375 is the only stainless one with sights.

Has anyone tried to FIND a Model 70 in any of the big calibers lately? NONE of the wholesalers have them and if they do, they reserve them for their high volume dealers. Also, where do you guys live that Wal Mart stocks 375s? that's great! I wnt to live there! Smiler jorge

Ok Nainital
by Gunsmith,
a) Fitting of a muzzle break Supradax 2, designed and made in France which is very effective on recoil reduction and suppress lifting of gun when fired
b) insert of lateral recoil steel insert in the stock
C) replacement of the folding leaf sight with a massive fixed distance 50 m steel one
d) Paychmayr safari type recoil pad
By myself
d) micro-polishing of bolt rail and slight recontouring and "glass aspect" smoothing of feed ramp : very necessary as "rough" rifle
e) Fitting of an EAW pivot scope mount with an extra nut drilled in rear unit for extra strenght
f) Leupold vari X 2 3-9X40 scope
g) Buttler Creek Alaskan Magnum sling (the best I know) with Quick detach swivel from Uncle Mike
That's all for now
Salute from France and enjoy hunting and shooting

whtailtaker,

Geez, if we could just get WalMart to handle Searcy Double Rifles.....

BTW, I notice lefties have been left out again in the add info. Too bad, would have loved to had a stainless in 375 for that low-do.

The stainless .375 is quite a bit lighter than the wood version, at least 2 lbs in the ones I have handled. I too would dump that synthetic stock and go with a better quality one or even a laminate.
