College told to start hunters course DAILY NEWS Reporter, Pasiansi Daily News; Tuesday,May 29, 2007 @00:04 THE Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Professor Jummanne Maghembe, yesterday gave Pasiansi Wildlife Management College here a five-year ultimatum to devise a curriculum for a professional hunters' course. Speaking at a graduation ceremony for 99 wildlife rangers at the college, Professor Maghembe said rangers graduating at Pasiansi and Mweka Wildlife Colleges should be allowed to re-join the colleges to upgrade themselves into hunting professionals. He, however, counselled the graduands to refrain from exchanging the country's natural resources with bribes, saying the vice would not only deny the government revenue, but also deny future generations with opportunity to see animals, which in other countries worldwide were extinct. "You deliberately underwent military training and discipline to guard the treasure trove in the bush," he said, cautioning the wildlife rangers not to rush to work in urban areas, arguing that wild animals' habitats were in the forests. He said tourists from all over the world continue flocking into the country's attractions including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro National Parks and Selous Game Reserves to ensure that they had a glimpse of natural resources hardly found in any other area in the world. Tanzania currently earns one billion US dollars from tourism, he said, adding that the country envisages attracting 900,000 tourists towards the end of this year and that one million tourists expected towards the end of next year were expected to bring into the country about 1.5bn US dollars. The cost of hunting wild animals, according to the minister, had also been hiked in the country compared to other countries such as South Africa because the country's national parks and game reserves alone offered value for the hunters' cash. The cost of hunting a lion, for instance, is 25,000 US dollars in the country compared to 18,000 US dollars in South Africa in addition to 21 days of Safari the hunter was required to pay before exploring hunting blocs. Of the 99 graduands, three were from Frankfurt Zoological Society, 28 were from Tanzania National Parks, two from NCAA, one from a district council, one from the ministry and 64 others are from the private sector. The graduands earlier had asked the ministry to consider providing the college with more instructors, classrooms, a librarian, tents, vehicles for field practical studies, a standby generator and medicines. I can fortell the future. Maybe in a few years. Tanzania is going to require PHs operating in Tanz to be either citizens or residents. Or at least try to require it for a period of time. The other Tanz threads mentioning foreignors hunting in Tanz show the trend. | |||
