Fols How to tell if the guys you are booking a hunt with are above board? Not hunting illegally on an occupied farm etc. Email Sally Bown or Julliet at the ZATSO offices and ask!!! they are paid to give out this information. You should also know the name of your PH and can check (same source) that they are licenced. Email:- ZATSO@mweb.co.zw I can provide the above int for members but it is not my job. I just feel sorry for the client who turns up and gets shafted. Also, running a particular company down when they have "political" connections isn't always good for my health. Remember there is no such thing as a "bargin" hunt in Zim- there are legal minimum fees that have to be charged and the money deposited before the trophies can be exported. The only way arround this is if you - personally - have the sole rights to a concession - and , with the new regulations even that is not clear.

Quote: Gringo Cazador, Same here. I have emailed Sally Brown several times in the past without a reply. It's hard to check things out when you can't get a reply to questions. Ganyana, Is Sally Brown still with ZATSO ? I heard earlier this year that she was no longer with ZATSO, but was not sure if that was true. Jim

I had an email from her at ZATSO on May 14th, so I presume she is still there. I notice that some ISPs don't work all that well at sending email to Zim. When I really need to get a mail there, I use one that always works. My home ISP is not reliable emailing to Zim. jim dodd

This is the message received if it is of value to anyone Dear Mr. Fortner I can confirm that Big Five Safaris are a legally licenced Operator and that they have a concession in Chewore North ( a state concession along the Zambezi in the north of the country). Both Buzz Charlton and Wayne van den Bergh are licenced for big game hunting. The Directors of Big Five are Mr. M.C. Rautenbach, Mr. W.H.M. Rautenbach and Mr. O. Chidawu, none of whom are on the list of banned 77.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but wouldn't it be a VERY helpful first start if they posted the list of the "banned" 77?

Mongo - Yes sally is still there, she left temp and was enticed back -or something. Appreciate email and work troubles. Provided I'm not overloaded will check on PH's for AR members. Perhaps it would be useful to post the entire list of 453 names on AR somewhere - will supply if Saeed requests. Cannot spell- who said English was a sensible easy language anyway?

Ganyana, Do you know if there is a comprehensive (published) list of people/companies who are operating illegally/on siezed land in Zim?

One of Us |
Hi Shakari Published list of the crooks Not to my knowledge. Many of them may be "technically" legal here, so to name them invites trouble. Jonny Rodrigues Zim Wildlife Foundation has a fairly comprehensive list but Jonny is very prone to exageration - suspect he is fairly anti hunting. ZATSO have a pretty full list but will not publish it. Also, several "good" operators in years past have not been above striking a "deal" with some land invaders so as to keep head above water - sad but true. Lastly- as you well know, operators are pretty jelous of their concessions and have to fight constantly to keep up and comming operators off their turf, so putting the boot in is all part of the turf wars. Conected to this, the only why an aspirant young operator can squeze in is to stab an established operator in the back and drive him out or perhaps "cut a deal" with some "A1" war vets or some "A2" Settlers!!!

I take it that one of the the Rautenbachs mentioned in the company is NOT the infamous Billy Rautenbach ??? whom has a somewhat chequered history of goings on in SA and Zimbabwe. Peter ----------------------------------------------- For reasons of alliance and payment of the war bill estimated at US $45 million, Kabila had signed an agreement between the "GECAMINES" and the Zimbabwean company Ridgepointe Overseas Developments of British Virgin Islands, which belongs to the RAUTENBACH family. The latter has good relations with President Mugabe, who, in turn, feels very close to the rich cobalt reserves of Katanga. This guarantees and helps to justify the presence of the Zimbabwean military in DRC, next to Kabila. --------------------------------------------

All, Let me echo Lloyd's remarks about caution in hunting in Zimbabwe. Although retired, I maintain a few contacts and can say that a tighter US gov't focus is being put on business, including hunting with Zim. Deposits, not to say trophies, could be at risk. I am a hunter myself and know Southern Africa well, having served in Lesotho, South Africa, and spent much time working the issue in pre-independent Namibia. I went to Zim just a few years back as part of a two-man SCI delegation to talk to stakeholders in the safari/hunting industry - private, farmers and government. We got a hearing in government, but no sale as the problem is with Mr. Mugabe himself. With South Africa continuing to be so relatively inert, little cause for optimism on an early resolution exists... Regards, Tim Carney
