Where do you go to hunt Red Lechwe? Caprivi area or where? Would like to chase them on the natural range.

Difficult one! Botswana is closed... and in Zambia they only occur in Liuwa Plains national park and parts of Kafue NP. I don't know of any that are on quota in any of the hunting GMAs around Kafue. It would be great if there were a huntable population in Zambia- then someone could come for a 'lechwe hat-trick'... Kafue Lechwe on the flats, Black Lechwe in Bangweulu and Red Lechwe on the Zambezi floodplains. African Parks are trying to extend their management mandate from Liuwa Plains NP onto the surrounding upper Zambezi GMA, which would restore wildlife and potentially open up hunting there again one day.

The caprivi strip has some, but the quota is small, I have read at least one report of red lechwe been hunted in the kasonso gma, I don't know if they occur in any other gma bordering the kafue np like the lunga luswishi

The area should produce some excellent trophies in the years to come with the added presence and permanent anti poaching unit. Arturo Cuturi Ntengu Safaris, Solwezi, North Western Zambia

Lunga Luswishi has not had red lechwe present (much less on quota) for decades. Lunga Busanga, which is between Lunga Luswishi and Kasonso Busanga, had them on quota back when it was Doug Reynolds' area before the closure. I don't know the story now, though.

Ross; I shot my first Red Lechwe in 1996 in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. In 1997 I shot 3 more for leopard bait. Those were the days before game scouts and being charged for bait animals. They were very, very plentiful! Hope you find one, Darin

If they can ever get hunting going in SE (Luiana) Angola you could add it to the list.

Beautiful Lechwe Darin! Like you, I was fortunate enough to hunt Botswana, prior it's closure. I hunted there in 2006 for Elephant in NG41 (or 42?) I was in camp Jogervega (sp) for Elephant and was going to Ivory camp in the Delta after, one, I was done hunting Elephant and two, Marc Watts was done hunting Lion. We were to switch camps. I was going there to hunt Red Lechwe and Tsessebe. I can, in all honesty say that Ivory camp was, without a close second, the most beautiful Safari camp I've ever stayed in. The entire camp was groomed fine sand, no shoes were required anywhere in camp. Deep shade blanketed the entire dining area and lounge. I shot my Lechwe on day two I believe. The Okavango was flooded when I was there. All travel was by Mokoro. I made a rather poor frontal shot that made for a long day of tracking, from island to island. Eventually, after several more poor shots, I had run out of ammo. The Lechwe was still able to run a bit in the knee deep water. The PH had left his rifle in the Mokoro and mine was dry, we actually chased it down. With no knife or bullets for my rifle, we really had no other option than to drown it. Not one of my finer moments on Safari. Point being my Lechwe hunt in it's endemic habitat was very memorable, as are all my Lechwe. Fond memories all. Botswana... Formerly "Nganga"
