I have a hunt booked with Vaughan in May and wouldn't mind trading notes with anyone else who is going. This will be my first African hunt and I am getting really excited.

Wish I could be of help and say I'm going this summer but for some reason my usually very understanding wife said I can't go this year!

Vaughan is probably happy for the break after pestering him for 3 years in a row!

You should have a great time!!

DC,

While you wait for a response, search this forum and the 'Hunting Reports - Africa' forum. You'll find several threads by those who've hunted with Vaughn.

Hi DC,

I'll be hunting with Vaughan for two weeks in September 2008 for cape buffalo and plains game.

And for DC and others; how did you decide which species you want to hunt? I'm struggling a bit on plains game selection.

Larry, Namibian PG that should be at the top of your list include:

1. Hartmann's mountain zebra
2. Gemsbok
3. Southern greater kudu
4. Springbok

These are all native species for which Namibia is justly famous.

The rest are pure electives as far as I'm concerned.

Not this year but I hunted with Vaughan/Classic Safaris the same time of the year you will be hunting in both 2005 and 2007 and would be happy to answer any questions you might have. mrlexma's suggested menu is good. Where will you be hunting and what game do you have in mind?

Elephant in August in the Caprivi.

I have also hunted with Vaughan three times previously.

MRs list is as good as it gets. I would almost go to Africa just to hunt zebra. Vaughan has some great gemsbock and kudu. And while I haven't hunted his newest plainsgame conservancies, Tsiseb is noted for springbok.

I also wouldn't rule out an eland if time and funds permit.

All in all, you'll have to work awfully hard not to have a great time!

My dad and I will be hunting in Vaughan's new concessions; Tsiseb and Otjimboyo. I am hoping to take Kudu, Mountain Zebra, Spingbok and Oryx. Would also take a steenbok if it was a real dandy. Not real interested in giraffe or Dik-dik at this point.

This trip hasn't really seemed real until the last couple of weeks. Now I'm utterly obsessed with going. After the hunt my wife and I are going to Etosha, the Okavango Delta, Chobe and Vic Falls as well. Places I've dreamed of since I was kid.

I've been using this forum for info for the last two years of planning and waiting, and feel good about my choice of consultant, PH, shipper and broker. Nothing to do now but go nuts waiting for the THE day.

500grains, thanks for the lead on the other forum. I will take a look.

I hunted for the second time with vaughan this year on my way home from Tanzania. I shot a great Kudu and Eland and my buddy got his Kudu with a bow.

I had a great hunt in the Tsiseb and Otijimboyo last year. You're going to have a real adventure. Just be sure to take lots of pictures and video.

That's a good list including steenbok. There may even be a klipspringer or two there. Pop a jackal while you are there. You will probably see several each day. You will enjoy Tsiseb and Otjimboyo. It's a very unique area bordering the Namib Desert. Vaughan and I spent most of time up near Otavi hunting eland so I only got to spend a few days there, but I can tell you it is loaded with springbok.

Jriley,

I will take LOTS of pictures. I look at your trip report about once a week because of the great one's you posted. Your nice steenbok convinced me to add them to my list as well.

Jorge400,

Hadn't thought much about Jackal but would certainly take one if given the chance. A tanned hide would make an interesting trophy.

My rule is, I shoot it when it becomes available. If the ph tells you it's a good animal and you ought to shoot it, don't question him. If you go with a menu and expect to shoot everything on it and nothing else, you'll miss part of the joy of a safari. Of course, there's no harm in having a "wish list" and in doing everything to maximize your chances of getting that list filled.

SFC E7 and eyedoc,

Are you guys hunting Tsiseb and Otijimboyo as well? Who are you using for broker and shipper. I am kind of settled on Pam Foerster and Hunter International at this point. The trophy shipping process is the only part that I am still trying to get a handle on.

Don

A lot of father son combinations! My dad and I will be hunting the caprivi for elephant, buffalo, and hippo in late July, early August.

I will be hunting a non-exportable elephant so a shipper is not a consideration. My hunt will take place in the Caprivi area. I do not expect much op for plains game.
