I believe that's a big no. I think the only countries that allow hunting for lioness is RSA, Zimbabwe, and I think, but am not sure Namibia.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Not in Game Management Areas and this evening I contacted a few PH's here and they do not know of a Lioness ever being shot by a safari client so I would say no.

Two notorious females were shot outside our Luangwa property as man eaters by the resident PH and that is the only recent case I know of but then again this was PAC.

Bought a comercial hunting DVD from a hunting agent on one of the european hunting conventions and saw where a client shot a lioness during a 7 day buffalo hunt in the luangwa...I was wondering if it was legal.

Could be taken under a 'special license' from the ministry. Now and again the area Warden may grant the PH and his client permission to deal with a problem animal.

Jeff,

You are correct, however they are large 50,000 acre fenced properties and the game has been purchased from the State and the owners can therefore sell Lioness. You probably hunted Pia Manzi in the Luangwa which was previously owned by Leopard Ridge?

Jeff,

Note the fences on these properties were removed by elephant and buffalo a long time ago and it was but a stipulation by the wildlife department in order to own game. The wildlife in these areas now come and go as they please.

Fairgame, I was there last year, fences up. I speak to the owner of the ranch all the time via e-mail.
Fences were up last year he has two crews that
keep them up. I am pretty sure his fences are still up. His place is fenced on 3 sides rivers borders the rest. Heading over in Aug and can let you know. 60,000+ acres

Fairgame, sorry I did not see your first until just now you are correct that is exactly where I hunted. The new owner just took the PMA accross the river as well.

35 years ago lioness were legal in GMA areas. I have no idea about today, but if I was going to guess it would be: I doubt it.

Hi Jeff,

This property adjoins the 50,000 acre Microsoft estate and I thought that they had removed the shared fence along the Nyimba river boundary?

When Ross Michealson owned it he was having problem with prides of Lion who were making a big dent in his Roan population.

Interesting about the GMA across the river - Nyalugwe - but it is fairly depleted and needs attention. What dates are you hunting as I will be in Munyamadzi 100kms up stream from you and it would have been nice to meet up?

Take lots of pictures and look forward to your report at a later date.

Cheers

Andrew

Andrew, I thought it was 50,000 how you guys measure land (flat) since its all rolling hills I figured it would me 60,000 how we measure.
I could be wrong. We are leopard hunting both the ranch and the PMA. I know it is a depleted area but I am thinking
since it has had very limited organized hunting there in some time we may find some monster leopard. What do you think? I am told there are some buff there as well. We have not found our flights yet but will be there from middle of Aug to 1st. of sept. Yes that would be cool if we could meet up. Damien has built several new chalets and I can't wait to see them. What will the temps be day and night that time of year?

Hi Jeff,

When you say PMA do you mean GMA - Game Management Area?

Presume your group is hunting two leopard as I cannot see why you would pay the expensive concession fees to hunt in the GMA?

Leopard in hot valleys such as the Luangwa are generally sleeker than their highland brothers and you will be looking at 120 - 140 lbs. Big Leopard but slender.

There are some buff there but they are smart, however beautiful country, remote and very scenic. You should have a great safari.

Unfortunately I will be hunting then but look forward to your report.

It will be warming up then but still quite cool in the mornings.

Go well.

Jeff,

That corner of Nyalugwe is very remote and I seem to remember that there are no roads so you will probably be hunting on foot or checking baits by boat?

I would of thought there would be very healthy Leopard population that stalks the river bank here and it should be an interesting hunt. There are some big Kudu, Waterbuck and tremendous Bushbuck that haunt that area.

Watch out for elephant as they can be very aggresive.

Give my regards to Jody.
