Guys,

If you were allowed to import game meat to your country, which would you choose?
I would choose Eland. And Oryx meat.

I am lucky enough that I shot a Gemsbok in New Mexico and have a freezer full of meat from him. I was very surprised at how mild the meat was. I figured it would be closer to our antelope in its "gamier" flavor. I actually prefer gemsbok to elk or deer.

I have eaten every species of plains game that Holly and I have shot so far: common reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, blesbok, impala, kudu, black wildebeest, blue wildebeest, zebra, gemsbok, springbok, grey duiker, klipspringer, steenbok, dik-dik, bushbuck, warthog, bushpig, waterbuck, eland and nyala.

They are all very good and I would bring the best cuts of all of them home to the USA if I could.

All of the African game I have tried has been very good, however Eland to me is the finest. Gemsbuck and Kudu are probably tied for second.

I have had gemsbok, kudu, zebra and springbok. The little springbok was the best.

Can anyone actually tell or say describe the taste of the various animals.

Some are coarser grained than others.

Obviously crocodile and ostriche is different.

I have eaten a fair few but honestly other than the grain, do not know if the meat was better due to the "cut", the species, the age and sex of the animal, the way it was cooked, numerous factors could contribute. If the meat one eats is from mature trophy animals, it has to be better from a young tender beast.

I guess one way is to try as many as many times as one can!

(PS I liked buffalo, ostriche, crocodile, eland among others. Did not like Zebra much. No chance to ever bring meat in here anyway)

Eland for sure. thumb thumb

NitroX the various game flavors vary so much within the same species that to describe the difference between the species is nearly impossible. They all taste "like chicken"......and they don't at all.

I've had moose and elk that could pass for great beef and no one would know. I've also had elk that was inedible!!!

I had Gemsbok in Africa that was great and it reminded me of the fabulous lamb that they served and I suspect it was HOW it was prepared.

I'm not sure there is an answer to your question.

Mate,

That's my point. At the moment I am eating chital that has the distinct flavour of liver. Will have to take another to see if it is a consistent flavourial characteristic.

PS If taste buds are referred to as one's palate, can you say "palatial" characteristics? Smiler

My vote would be for springbok, eland, kudu, and gemsbok in that order. Others like impala, wildebeest, and buffalo were alright but not as good. My only go at sable was tough as shoe leather. Don't know if that is typical of the specie, or if this critter chose to be contrary.

If you are looking for a steak, has to be Eland. Looking for a snack, Gemsbok Sausage is really good.
