It's a Ruger RSM it weighs 11.25 lbs empty with scope and sling, figure 400 grn bullet, at 2400 fps, 91 grns of powder... How does that compare say with an 8 lb, 30-06, 180 grn bullet at 2700 fps and 53 grns of powder Anybody got a recoil calculator? Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Good gosh that is a heavy Rigby. And I like it! It should be a sweet shooting rifle. My Lott weighs 10 lbs 15 oz without any rounds in it. I had to put a mercury recoil reducer in the stock to tame it. That weight is with the mercury recoil reducer. I like heavy rifles because they steady for me better for offhand shots. If you can carry a rifle of that weight, I think you will be bringing home a lot of game. How did you get it to weigh so much? ___________________ Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...holy crap...what a ride!"

Yikes are you sure about that 13.25 pounds?? My .375 RSM with rings and 1.5x5 Leupold and loaded with four rounds down tips at exactly 11 lbs and I thought that was a bit hefty! Yes, it's a pussycat to shoot, but I don't like my rifles much over the 10 pound range personally. Without the scope/rings it's 10 lbs 3 ounces loaded with four rounds of 300gr ammo. .22 LR Ruger M77/22 30-06 Ruger M77/MkII .375 H&H Ruger RSM

Mike, Too echo all the others, man that's a heavy RSM First, does it have a good pad on it or the crap 1/4" hard rubber factory "pad?" Get a good pad to your LOP (I LOVE limbsavers). Start your shooting with the lower power loads, say a Hornady 400 at 2200+ instead of 2400. It is amazing the recoil difference as you go up the velocity scale. As you get more comfortable you can explore higher velocity loadings and make your own conclusions. For me, my RSM Rigby at high levels equals the recoil of my RSM Lott...so I have backed off a bit and enjoy the 400s at 2400 and leave the heavier kicking to my Lott. I have found the RSM stocks are pretty decent in controlling recoil (as opposed to a #1 stock). Try a Past recoil shield when benching your rifle. I choose the mid level one and it helps. I am just not comfortable shooting with a sandbag behind the rifle butt, but again experiment with what works for you. Remember these bigger rifles are not bench friendly. Practice good technique for a big rifle (upright posture, holding on and pulling the rifle into your shoulder with BOTH hands) and you will be fine. After the sighting in and load checking comes the fun part-shooting your big bore as it was intended! There is nothing better (well except for a DG hunt!) than to spend time busting rocks or popping varmints with your big caliber rifle. Delivering a large, heavy projectile on reactive targets gets me going every time. There is just something about effectively delivering a smashing blow on "something" that lifts your spirits! John There are those that do, those that dream, and those that only read about it and then post their "expertise" on AR!

Mike At that weight the recoil sould not be too bad. If you still fine it uncomfortable drop the velocity to 2150/2200fps. I doubt if the buff or elephant can tell the difference. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

That is a very heavy rifle! Once you fire a few rounds, recoil should not bother you much. I just entered the details for our 375/404 - which weighs 9 pounds with scope and 3 rounds of ammo! and got figures of 55 and 19 on the recoil measurements.

We might go to the same gym Anyway, I have an 06, 375, and both rip me pretty good off the bench. The 06 shouldn't, according to the recoil table, and it's 10 lb weight, but it does. I think the lower pressure of the 416 should help tame recoil. I also suspect that factory ammo uses either cheap, hard kicking powder, or relatively high pressure, resulting in snappy recoil, that makes what should be a slower push, into a sharp snap. I know shooting mil ammo off the bench with the 06 is no walk in the park, nor is shooting Weatherby loaded 375 H&H, with 300 grain bullets. I suspect these loads, in our nice, 100 degree heat, are over 50k in pressure. Your rigby shouldn't be up there... G

Mike You might want to weigh a 10 pound sack of flour and a 25 pound bag of shot on those scales. Even if this is older RSM with the heavier barrel and has a piece of the heaviest wood in existence, I don't see how that rifle could approach that weight.

Like Jorge, I've got one of the original Ruger RSMs in .416 Rigby. (The earlier ones had the sling barrel band inletted into the stock instead of being mounted forward of the stock. Mine is one of these.) These had a heavier contour barrel than what is currently offered by Ruger. My RSM is just a little shy of 11.5 lbs with a Leupold 1.5-5x Vari-X III scope on it. Several years ago, Ruger starting using the .375 H&H contour barrel on the .416 Rigbys in an effert to decrease the weight of the rifle. But, after shooting my Ruger in .416 Rigby, I'm kind of glad that mine is one of the original, heavier ones!!! -Bob F.

About like a 9 lb. 375 or 338 would be close enough for government work... Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

And just for the record, I have a second generation RSM .416 Rigby that has a fat barrel like BF's but a barrel band forward sling mount like the current light barreled Third Generation RSM's. The First Generation and Second Generation RSM barrels are 0.810" at the muzzle and 24" long. My Second Generation RSM weighs 10.75 pounds bare/empty. I weighed and measured a Third Generation RSM .416 Rigby at Cabela's and found it to have a muzzle diameter of 0.750", 23 " barrel, and 9.5 pounds bare/empty weight. I sure like the way the Third Generation RSM's carry, but I sure like the way my Second Generation Fat Barrel RSM shoots: 0.147" center-to-center for three shots at 100 yards, with the GSC .416/380gr FN, Norma Brass, GM215M primer, and 105.0 grains of H4831 Extreme Long Cut. Velocity just over 2500 fps. A blast from the past with the Jack O'Connor Rigby charge of H4831.

RIP, I didn't know that there had been three generations of the Ruger RSM in .416 Rigby. Good info. I thought there had been only two. Thanks for passing that info along! -Bob F.

A 416 should weigh about 8.5 pounds sans scope and 9.5 pounds with a scope..I would start with drilling the butt stock and cutting some slots in the forend, and doing all I could to lighten the rifle... Packing a 13 pound rifle all day in the African heat can be grueling to say the least...everyone I know that really hunts in Africa gets a lighter gun every year! Well Ray, I am going to to the gym...and then become a PH and hunt without my shirt on...look out John Sharp. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
