After 30yrs of reloading, I finally purchased a chronograph. What fun!! My standard "plinking" .460 WM load is a 500gr Hornady soft over 108gr of H4350. The average of 5 rounds was just under 2300fps. I did a plains game hunt in September and am up for buff in May '06. Would this load be adequate for buff? The rifle is a custom on a Brno 602 action with a 1.5-5X VariX III. Thanks, Bob

That would be perfect if the bullet is the new Hornady bonded core, Interbond? 500 grains at 2300 fps is more than a hot loaded .458 Lott should do. In the 460 Wby that is a trouble free low pressure load, and would be devastating. Great powder choice too, little temperature sensitivity in the Hodgdon Extreme line. Perfect match of powder to case and projectile.

VFR, As suggested your load sounds like a beaut unless you are using the old Hornady bullet. At 2300fps I could almost guarantee core and jacket seperation on a buffalo. Cut the load a little and try the Swift bullet. The Swift will come to pressure a little quicker than the Hornady but 2300fps should be easy in your Weatherby. I personally have killed a pile of stuff with the Swifts and they just always work. Good luck, Mark

If we're talking about bullets to use for buff and other DG someone made a very good post on different 458 bullets here a while ago. Guess someone can do a search and post the link for the gentleman. I have never been able to make the search function work properly. I would also direct you to Mike Brady at www.northforkbullets.com . Their 400 and 450grs bullets should do wonders on buff at 24-2500f/s with a little less recoil than the 500grs loads. If you are talking about the 500grs Hornady Interlock I would strongly advice you to choose again. That is by no means a DG bullet!!

Sauer150, That would be me. My test of 20 premium .458 bullets will be the second article posted on Saeed's On-Line Magazine. Comming soon to a chat room near you! It was posted for a few weeks on the Nickudu Files. The short course was, 400 and 450 North Fork, 500 gr Kodiak and 500 gr Swift. Honorable mention 450 grain Kodiak and 450 gr BarnesX. Biggest dissapointment 500 gr Trophy Bonded Speer. There are so many good .458's available I would not use the old Hornady RN, but have not tried the new Interbond which came out after my three year long test of premium .458's. If anyone of you guys uses them and wants them included in the OnLine magazine test, send me a PM if you are willing to send me 5-6 of them and I will whack the 5 gallon water buckets. (These had a 91-95% correlation to bullets recovered from buffalo). New .458's keep comming out, and I have not tested the 500 gr Woodleigh PP, 550 gr Woodleigh RN, 450 or 500 gr Barnes X tripple Shock, or 425 gr Rhino which is available now. There are 20 others I did test and it will be on-line soon. Andy

Andy, thank you for the post !! I really enjoyed the article you made concerning .458 bullets. Nice job and keep more like that coming. Since I do not own a .458 for myself what about a similar .375 Bullet test ?? Where do one get the online magazine?? And how can one participate? I do quite a bit of testing and pressure shooting in different guns. Maybe that would be something others could benefit from as well? If so let me know I will try to find the time to translate a few articles into english.

Thats a fine load with room to spare...Northforks, Woodleighs and GS Custom bullets are my choices in 458 caliber big bores..I have seen good work done with Barnes X bullets in the big bores on buffalo...

Quote: Yes, I believe it will suffice. I shoot a 450 Dakota (balistic twin to your 460) I load 106 gr behind a 500 Swift A-Frame and a 500 gr Barnes solid. Trust me ... it works! Buffalo do not like to be hit with this round!
