Well I just finished my new FN action 416 Rem. and took some photographs, all it needs now is bluing and some minor touch up... The Turkish walnut blank, was as hard as marble, I liked the blank, even though it was a tad plain for some, it was perfectly laid out and like I said hard as woodpecker lips as Belk would say, and checkered beatifully... Id post a picture but don't have the capability or desire to learn, ain't that a bitch!! guess its age, tired of learning, compromising, and doing anything that I don't want to! Oh yeah, two more to go, my 10.75 x 68 is simi done, I am shooting it in an old FN Sako stock and it needs to be stocked and blued... My 404 is at Dennis Olsons for metal work and I have a fantastic piece of Turkish walnut from Chiron for it, it came up on auction and I snapped it up on buy now...I don't think those turks actually auction any thing off unless it beats the buy now price, in fact I am sure of it... Funny how Chirons price the wood, some of the crap they price at $1500 because its wiggly and marble cake with a grain that would surly split on a big bore, and then sell a wonderful blank and well colored blank for $450..beats me who is grading their wood, but he ought to be in the furniture business, not gun stocks...but hey whos complaining, this is a good thing. Ray, I will make you one hell of an offer just to prove what a super guy I am. Send me the rifle, and I will take it to Tanzania in July and hunt with it for you !!!!! It will save you all that hassle of packing, getting tickets, visas etc etc. I wouldn't make this offer to just anyone. Why don't you go ahead and send it now so I can work up a good load for it? I'm quite sure that JudgeG, and Pierr'e, and all of the camp staff would enjoy shooting it also. I'll even post pictures of it for you. I know how !!!! What say??

Ray's rifle is really beautiful. The blanks Chiron puts on its website (http://www.hunterbid.com) usually have a reserve price set pretty close to their "buy it now" price. Occasionally they sell some on ebay w/o reserves. I bought 2 Turkish blanks from them off ebay for $42 each, not fancy but very dense straight grain with some contrast. I traded one to Jeffeosso for a barrel and he turned it on his new home-built pantograph for his 550 Express: NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. MHC TX, A comm. FN action, Lothar Walther barrel, Blackburn drop box and trigger, This stick is not Chiron, its a plain European, not Turkish, blank that Bill Dowtin gave me, it is the hardest piece of wood I have ever worked with, nice stuff from Russia...the rear sights are Wisners screw gizzie V knockoffs, that used to be on pre war M-70 Super grades..barrel band swivel, rear swivel, front sight, from NECG and grip cap is a two screw Fisher...Solid black recoil pad is one of those Sorbothane types by somebody...just one I had in the shop..it sure works well..I think I got it from Galazans??? Most of the barrel work and feed work was done by Dennis Olson, The stock was done by me.. Rip, Yes, I had poltigides menech when I was but a child of 5 and my left arm is some 18 inches shorter than my right, It is a desease that began in England in about the 1920s, and you see these short forearms from time to time on English rifles, but I have to tell you it hurts when some mean natured person such as yourself brings it to my attention, thus the short forend.. I will, of course, report this to the E.U.O.S.F.F. assn. and they will be contacting you accordingly, suggest you consult your lawyer...BTW that is the English Union of Short Forend folks... For clarification the Chiron blank of turkish walnut is for my .404 Jefferys...It is an absolutly beatiful blank with lot of contrasting smokey dark stripes that run from toe to forend perfectly with a slightly lighter matrix, but its a dark dark piece of wood...Its gonna be a knockout...I have another piece of turkish, like the 416 its rather plain, but real nice wood.... I am not really into color for the most part, I like a subdued stock that balances and doesn't grab the eye and take away from the workmanship, and they cost a lot less!! This old kid tends to drag them about the bush a bit more than most, so I tend toward what is efficient, but I still like a nice gun... I do buy a purty piece now and then but its not for me, it goes on the auction block... I really like your new rifle. I am waiting for the third and fourth installments on my African battery. I have the 404 Jeffery and the 375 H&H and will have my 458 Lott in a couple of months. The 300 H&H will is supposed to be here by Christmas. Fun stuff !! I love the feel of walnut in the morning! square shooter

Ray, it is really beuatiful. I am glad to see that somebody likes those replica sights that Jim does, his are better than the original so we should probably call them improved rather than replica. I have an original I donated to the project for my stepfather's rifle and got a replacement base for it from Jim. Which pattern did you use for the stock? Do you have patterns for some of these gorgeous old english styles or somebody that can duplicate for you without damaging the original? Thanks for sharing. Red

The lines are simply perfect. Beautiful rifle. By the way, the knife in the trigger guard looks Finnish, with the horse´s head. Could this be the case? Boha
