I am finally going to get my 500 Jeffery RSM conversion in the very near future. I have a 458 Lott which is scopeless. A 416 Rigby with a 1.5x5. Any thoughts about using a low power scope on this rifle for actual field use. I was thinking about a 2.5x Leupold M8? Is this sound thinking or am I just looking for a good poke in the eye. I have never hunted dangerous game but would like to with this rifle some day. What I'm hoping to hear is some actual advice from someone who has been there and done that. Thanks Brad

I would not want to scope a 500 Jeffery. Sooner or later it is going to get you. If you need something better than iron sights take a look at the Doctor Optic red dot. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Brad If you try and use a rear mounted scope--1.5X5 Leupold is nearly your only choice, and then I don't think go above 3X. My 500 MDM rolls 550 gr bullets out at 2200 fps--it weighs 8.5 lbs and I am working with a 1.5X5 just fine. Depending on how mounted this that and the other--my rifles are Win M70s. Another option that I use on my 510 Wells is a forward mounted Leupold 2X Scout Scope. It is forward of the receiver. While this is a good option for doing range work I don't believe it is a great option for dangerous game. The field of view on all forward mounted scout scopes leaves much to be desired. For things that are really close you are at a disadvantage. NE450 brings up an excellent option for this sort of rifle, the red dot! While I have not worked with a Doctor Optic I have worked with several of the smaller compact Aimpoints. For dangerous game at close range they work great. I think that on a heavy kicker this may be the ticket! Brad: I have a scope on my CZ .500 Jeffery. It is a Leupold 2.5X20mm Ultralight. It's perfect for the .500 Jeffery because it has nearly five inches of eye relief and it is virtually indestructible. I have never had this scope come close to touching my eye brow, ever from the bench. The low power fixed scope gives me a lot better point of aim than the open sights. I sighted mine in at 60 meters and it works really well. I shoot my Gibbs with open sights but have been giving thoughts to a peep sight... you might consider it as well unless you need the magnification. Thanks for the info. The only reason I ask this question is that I read a study where they tested target dection and getting a shot on target. I believe that the participants did best using a fixed power low mag scope when compared to traditional open sites a ghost site or the scope. I think the Eotech would be great but looks like a bug. The only scoped I'd opt for would be the 2.5x but might try the red dot. I have a 458 Lott and a 416 Rigby RSM to play with before I get my 500 Jeffery RSM. Thanks Brad

Brad, If you want to scope your .500 Jeffrey (if you need the magnification as bwanamrm said)I would advise you take steps in reducing the recoil and mounting the scope with sufficient eye-relief to avoid a possible serious whacking which will come sooner or later. I have mounted a Hakko Panorama BED-35 on my .500 NE sighted for 25 yds. It gives me a choice of 5 different aiming pointers; dot, cross, ring, etc., variable intensity of illumination and can be shot with both eyes open. I find the Panorama ideal for those quick split second shots where both eyes are on the target and the dot is automatically there without having to search for it. The main reason I opted for the Panorama from a wide choice of aim point devices is that magnification is 1 x 1, light, easy to remove, wide FOV, long battery life - when you raise that rifle you don't know you're looking through the reticle I also appreciate that having it mounted on a double rifle may not go down too well with some of those wishing to maintain tradition - somehow my butt and those of others who might be with me are worth more. Just a suggestion.
