Hi All: If you've ever been to Kruger National Park, a must see is the Kruger elephant museum at Letaba. It contains all of the actual tusks from the big tuskers that have lived and died in the Park. You can photograph them, touch them, dream, etc. etc. Three more just died recently within three weeks of each other, but we were told that their tusks will probably be displayed elsewhere in the Park. Attached are some photos of the museum. Sorry about the pics being a little out of focus, but I was using my backup camera because my other expensive one had taken an accidental dunk in a waterhole the first day out. Finally, the last two pics are of one of the future 100#+ tuskers, who is just a teenager right now, but likes to hang out near Letaba and can be seen occasionally.

That museum is on my list of things to do. What is the story on the tusk through the other's skull?

The story (as my wife remembers it better than me) was that that particular elephant had been in a battle with another one, had had one of the other elephant's tusks broken off in his skull (missing the brain) and had lived for a number of years with the tusk embedded in his skull before he died.

That was great, thanks for posting the photos.

I wonder if there are any photos of that elephant alive?

Neither of us can recall seeing any at the museum. Maybe someone out there can shed some further light on it.

Looks like they have made a fancy, new museum since I was there moons ago. Impressive ivory. Thanks for sharing.

It's been about 7 years since I was there, but yes, it was an impressive museum. Well worth a stop. I vaguely remember seeing some pictures there of that elephant when it was still alive.

Impressive pictures, especially the one with the tusk through the skull. Seems like the platform on which the skull is displayed has a picture of the live animal on the right side.
