I know it may belong to the gunsmithing/reloading forums. I also know that experienced hunters -shooters haunt this forum.
I have 3 404 Jeffrey rifles and all of them feed Swifts, Woodleighs, and North Fork softs very well. The cup point solids will feed except the last round out of the mag. The flat hits the feed ramp about mid way and stalls. If you put a NorthFork or a Woodleigh solid as the last round (right feed rail) it will feed all rounds well. I have time to have the rifles checked out and have contacted Penrod Custom to do this. If hunting dangerous game with either the cup point solid or another premium soft, as long as the last round in the box will feed without fail is that good enough to get the work done?????

Interesting post as I'm currently having my own .404's feed ramp polished to ensure reliability.

I think that you simply need a stronger spring under the follower, and be sure and have a full length follower...but only if you have the correct size magazine box...

Your simple cure is to not use a cup point as the last round and be sure there is a solid there...but I suspect that cure is not satisfactory to you, and it would not suit me either...

Your on the right track, Penrod is an excellent metalsmith and should be more than capable of fixing it, if a stronger spring doesn't cure the proplem..

At any rate your on track.

thanks, Ray, I was thinking that if you are huning buff and using the cup point as your first rounds then having a true solid in the bottom as a last resort is NOT a bad thing????Am I right?? Having Mark go through the rifles before the season is the right thing anyway, but I was thinking that to change the geometry of the feed ramp for one of 5 bullets might not necessarily be the best idea in light of the fact that once the metal is gone there is no going back. You never know where one cure might engender several ills! What do you think?

I have a sim. problem w/ mine. The last round, if a cup point, fails to feed about 50% of the time. I decided to use Barnes mono in the bottom. I had a machinist friend cup point the Banrnes, feeds great but I don't know how it performs. Oh well, back to Africa I guess!
I'll have to try a stronger spring to get the NF cup points to feed, thanks Ray.
