Selous July or Oct

Can do a Buf hunt in Selous and go early July or mid Oct. For those that have been what is your choice?

It's been said to avoid Nairobi, however with Delta may be hard. NWA/KLM is a possiblity, but if I stay with Delta are bags(firearms) checked through with a short layover a problem? What are the problems with the Nairobi connection?

I knew the choice was Oct and I would like to have at least one trip into Africa late in the season instead of early.

If my Zim trip comes off as planned in June I will return in October.

If not I will head to Selous in July.

Son will be in third year of college and daughter in grad school. Neither of them can afford to miss school.

One or both of them is always my sidekick.

We hunted the Selous in Oct of 06 and it was very hot and I am from S. Georgia. That trip was Our eighth to Africa and the first after Sept. If you are an amateur herpetologist(or professional) it is a great time to go as we saw more snakes than all the other trips combined. Four Mambas, one large puff adder in camp and a 10 plus foot python in the dining area. The only other selous trip was in Sept. 05 and we eperienced many fewer snakes and creepy critters. One should however, IMO go at least as late as late Aug or early Sept so the grass will have been burned and regrowth is underway. My best buff was taken on the Oct trip however. Did I say it was hot? Did I mention the snakesss?

I once killed three buff in ten days in the Selous in July. I had no problems with the grass or other vegetation, although not much burning had taken place.

Whether October would be better depends on the topography of the blocks in question. I wouldn't necessarily choose October over July unless I knew more about the area.

I'd go NWA/KLM through Dar. Not a bad trip with a couple of hours layover at AMS, which is a nice airport.

I'd take a day in the hotel to decompress and give your luggage a chance to catch up, in case you need it. Mine got there with me, though, but it was nice to catch up on my sleep.

I hear the Sea Cliff is down because of a fire. I can recommend the Movenpick as a very comfortable hotel with a bakery and a Barclay's Bank across the street with an ATM, which will save you money over hotel rates on currency conversion. I really enjoyed my stay, and, BTW, if you don't like hunting in tall grass, I'd recommend October. I went the last week in Sept. Take a hat with a short brim, long pants and longsleeve shirts and plenty of sunscreen. I'm from Florida, and it was hot for me.
