I'm South African resident wanting to hunt Namibia next year in July with a friend of mine since I'm South African it does mean that I'm a foreigner to their country.

So I heard that we don't need a ph to hunt for meat but we will need a ph if we want to take back trophies. So lets say I shoot an exceptional springbuck and want to take the trophy home. Is there a way that I can get the neccesary paperwork for that one springbuck or must I book a ph for the whole duration of the hunt ?

Another question if it means that we can hunt meat in Namibia without a ph that surely means that anybody else who is not a resident of Namibia can do the same ?? Yes, I know we need invitation letters from the farmer where we will hunt but that is as far as it goes isn't it.

First you need a letter of invitation. You need that to apply for your rifle export permit. Apply for your riffle export permit, the police issue it while you wait, they are supose to do it.

You apply at the vet services for a import permit for the meat and the trophies.

When you enter Namibia you register as a biltong hunter or a trophy hunter. If you are a biltong hunter you cannot bring out the trophies, if you are a trophy hunter you cannot bring out the meat. For throphy hunting you must be accompanied by a ph

You are only allowed to bring out a certain amount of meat, I my be wrong on the quantities but it is something like 2 large animals or 1 large and 3 small or 5 small animals.

You also need a vet permit from Namibia to bring out the meat and the trophies. You will pay VAT on the import of meat and/ or the trophies after the rebate is deucted. If you do not have a valid invoice, they will calculate the value.

The above is only valid for citizens of neighbouring countries. All other foreighners are treated differently, they cannot be meat hnters.

You must also decide how you will travel to Namibia. If you travel through Botswana, you will need temporary rifle import permits. The vet services in Namibia must seal the container in which you transport the meat through Botswana.

There are certain periods in which you may hunt certain animals, make sure of that. I know of hunters who hunted animals out of season and they ended up with big problems.

Hope it will help.

Safari hunt, you can bring out meat, even if you are a trophy hunter, as you can combine trophy and meat hunting. You will have to use a registered hunting guide (minimum) or PH to get the paperwork in order to export the horns of anything shot. This is a seperate permit, trophy hunting permit, and cost N$25. Contact me with dates, I might be able to help you for a day or 2.

This is good news, when I went in 2005 I was told that I could not register for both. It was most probably because the person did not know. I had to leave all my skins and a 42" Gemsbok trophy in Stampriet.

Next time I will know better

Thanks Karl

Karl S,

Thanx for the help I will pass on the dates asap. We are looking at the end of July. My friend has hunted there before but didn't bring back any trophies. I would hate to leave a good animal behind even if it was shot for meat. clap

BTW, from a news letter I got from PHASA we don't need visas for business purposes anymore could a hunt be seen as business ???

I did not need a visa in 2005, I am not sure about Botswana. I will recomend that you do not go through Botswana, I enjoyed the trip through Upington and we entered at Nakop and slept over at Grünau before traveling to Stampriet the next day. We had no problems on returning with our meat. The guys on the Namibia side were very helpful.

Safari-Hunt, you don't need a business visa to enter Namibia for a hunt - this is classified as a "holiday". I hunted with a client there just last month and had no problems with visas flying into Windhoek. I returned to Namibia driving via Botswana the following week and again I did not need a visa so I'm pretty sure you'll have no problem visa-wise. If you wanted to travel with firearms via Botswana you'll need to contact the authorities for a permit beforehand.

Don't travel via Botswana on your return trip if you're bringing back meat though - well definitely not if you're coming in via the Caprivi strip. They confiscated all meat products at the border post when I came back last week. (Fortunately I wasn't bringing any meat back so this was no problem for me).

Yip, you will not require a visa at all - exactly the same as entering Botswana.

Safari-hunt, the other possible option is if you or your friend hunt with family/ relatives in Namibia, as a farmer may allow 2 relatives per year to hunt for trophies on his farm, without a PH or hunting guide, but with reponsable supervision. And yes, you do not need a visa, and have never needed a visa with a SA passport. Why do you think of it as business? Its supposed to be fun...!
