Cabelas has Left-Handed shooting shirts that I might add to my hunting collection. I usually use the Serengeti Safari shirts in dark tan or grasslands.

I am thinking of ordering two of each of the Hunter Green/Sage (maybe too dark?) and the Tan/Sage (maybe too light?). Any suggestions?

Feels like it, but it will be my second Smiler

First was a mixed Plains game hunt, second will be a game bird, waterfowl and some plains game hunt.

So, any thoughts?

In my opinion, the green would be too hot. I'd go with the tan. Although I would prefer something a shade darker.

Long Grass Outfitters has a nice selection of colors.

That said, I have seen some PH's wear colors that don't match anything in nature.

Terry

I watched part of Boddingtons video on Buffalo, the whole thing is about 4 hours long. One of the PHs wore a white t-shirt, the tracker an orange jumpsuit.

Who cares as long as it is comfortable. Save the catalog look for SCI meetings. Razzer

Wear what is comfortable!
My PH hunted in gym shorts, muscle shirt and some hi tech flop flops.

I look like a walking Cabelas ad! Eeker

It's going to be cold in the mornings and hot miday and afternoon. You are going to be walking, a lot!

Take a jacket and something to cover your face for the morning buggy ride. Get a hat with a brim. Bring your sunscreen.

Oh, and have a good time!

Darker is better than lighter in terms of concealment in the bushveld of South Africa for instance. The light tan shirts are too bright. Blase orange is I guess good if you need to meet local US hunting regulations are hunting in some place like Pennsylvania where on opening day your greatest risk is another hunter.

For the bushveld in the colder months, I prefer medium Khaki pants with a grey or loden shirt. Neither green (olive) or tan fit in with the bare vegetation well. For open plains, light blue/grey to dark tan seems to work well. For some reason, most animals seem to ignore blue/gray colors in the veld.
I did pick up some sice, heavy swiss tab epaulet shirts at old navy recently for cheap, about $20/US that work great in RSA, just remember that when in the bushveld, even the grass has thorns, so get something that will hold up if you hunt there.

Again with the SCI meeting stuff!

It depends on where and when. I've yet to be anywhere when it was not hot as hell during most of the day. How people survive in dark green shirts is beyond me.

I always take a down jacket for the mornings and evenings, even on the Zambezi. Some places are like the artic in the morning/evening. Have to be prepared or freeze to death.

We were very concerned about colors for our first trip, trying to stick with olives, etc. Then our PH wore his tennis shoes & blue jeans with just any old color shirt. But, he was good!

I still prefer and recommend medium to dark toned olives to the lighter khaki - especially for stalking.

Hey, there was a local SCI guy laid out in his coffin a couple years ago, with his genuine SCI loden green shirt on. Spooky! Cool

In february I’ll hunt in the bush and in the rain forest. I had been asked to use (no camo) dark khaki or dark green. Definitely no tan or pale colours. The fabric must be light, ventilated, silent and extending is better.
This thread turns up in the nick of the time, I am right now ordering at Cabelas,

Stretch 7-pockets Hiker pants Olive + Field kakhi

Expedition wear Shirt Light olive + canyon

along with moisture-wicking ultimax socks, a neoprene sling, broadheads, and camo gloves.

Light greens, darker tans, and Gray worked for me. I had a friend of mine on safari a few years ago, he wore white tee shirts during the day, not good, had a very hard time trying to stalk up on anything!

Dark tans, to Loden in the early months of Safari season (May, June, and first half of July) in most places. The clothing should be all cotton, because synthetics will die when the guy with the hot iron gets to them. Cotten is cooler, anyway! Greys and blue in the hot months September through the end of the season, is a good rule.

Of the shirts you posted, I would go with the Hunter green/sage, and Tan/sage! Leave the Blaze orange, or camoflague for whitetail hunting in the USA, and gun shows. I hate Cammo clothing, reminds me of AK47s, bayonets, bungisticks, and land mines. Animals see movement, and flashing objects, more than anything, anyway. Cabella's Sarengeti shirts, are great, and Long Grass has anything you might need.

I own both green and tan safari clothes. Wash them a few times before going on safari to remove the brighteners and soften the colors.

Don't worry about damaging them (if they're of high quality); if you're in a bush camp, the staff will boil your clothes clean.

I prefer the olive, khaki, loden, colors. You should go straight to Long Grass! Of the pictures you posted, the Tan/Sage is the only one I would bother with. Personally I wouldn't wear anything with cammo on it while in Africa. No sense having that one thing in a thousand ruin a trip over your wardrobe!

Will, I can see you wearing a "John Sharp" shirt (i.e. shirtless) whilst on safari in the worst tse-tse afflicted region of Africa Eeker

Canadianlefty, don't know if they still will do it, but I had Filson's make me up some of their excellent Safari shirts in left hand version. They are superb, and the cartridge loops are perfect for holding 416 Rigby rounds, two to a slot.

Great idea JoeR.

Unfortunately, I just placed a $600 dollar order with Cabelas.

Their left-hand shirts were out of stock in tan/sage, but I bought 8 others along with pants, gaitors, gloves, underwear etc.

Cheers,
CL
