Personally I prefer the Hill Stag on the Moors of the Scotish highlands. They are no where near the size of the other stag talked about here but man what a hunt. If you want more info on them just email me.

Ron,

coming from Europe I'm (obviously ) recommending to hunt the Red Steg in its' original habitat in Europe. The biggest red deer come from Southern Hungary, Romania or the Belarus and can reach up to 14kg weight (No idea what does this mean in SCI or CIC points...) - but these "monster" red deer are also quite expensive (>10.000).

There are also a lot of much cheaper hunts like for example in Poland (this fall I will go there with my dad and the hunt including trophy will be about 2000 including trophy...).

One recommendation what you absolutely should do when you hunt red deer: Hunt in the rut (end of september / beginning of october) - it is from my experience one of the most spectacular natural experiences!!!

By the way, the trophy which I'm probably most proud of is my second red stag - shot after over 14 days of unsuccessful hunts on the last evening at dawn and it was for the area (in the mountains of northern ungarn) one of the best trophies during that year:

(This stag is about 7 kg by the way...)

Best regards and good luck with hunting!

Erik

I' with ErikT,
I'm sure that in NZ and Argentine there are big or enormous bull of Red Stag, but Cervus Elaphus is European and is better to hunt it in Europe.
Choose one of the Mittel Europe, Hungary, Romenia, Bulgary, Poland Czech or Slovakia, Germany or Austria. One of the nations where this hunt is an old good tradition.
Choose the trophy weight or the number of C.I.C. points that you wish obtain, make it equivalent in US$, and all this match with your mind
book the hunt beginning from the third week of September. If you can spend some time on holidays it is better, there is no warranty about the start of the rut on 20th of september, it depend by the temperature, even if this can be a good year, it is already cooling down.....I heard about a SouthAfricans that get back home after 10 silent days because too warm. Two days later the bulls where challenging each other with loud voices.
As already wrote ErikT, don't miss this challenging chorus, is something of thrilling and exciting...........and don't miss to appreciate the tradition, it is something that goes back in a far past.

E-mail me if you need more info.

The ones in Scotland on the Hill tend to be the smallest, but the stalking itself is something else. The best way to describe the terrain might be hilly or mountainous tundra.

Here are pics to illustrate Pete's description. They were taken while stalking Reds in Blair Atholl. Breath taking scenery and hard hunting.
