Larry,

great video!

Question on double rifle technique:

I shoot a .458 Winchester bolt action. I noticed on the second elephant video, it was obviously a well placed shot and the bull went down. When you ran up to the elephant...you fired the second barrel, thus emptying the both barrels.

Would it be better to reload immediately after the first shot as you ran to the elephant just in case you knocked out the elephant and not actually hit the brain? Or the nearby elephants charged?

What is the proper protocol for double rifles ....if there is any?

thanks,

dale

Thanks.

I thought about the same thing. I would have reloaded had the other elephants not been high tailing it out of there. I would have reloaded if there was the slightest doubt about the elephant getting up.

In retrospect, I probably should have reloaded.

DaleW:

I guess replacing the spent cartridge would classify as an "unwritten rule" if only one shot was fired, as in Larry's case.

Larry though cannot really be faulted either because as evidenced by the footage, the elephant was truly down and out from the first shot and given the unfolding sequence of events, felt secure enough that the single remaining shot sealing the deal was sufficient.

Nice shooting Larry! Wink

Seeing you have acquired the taste of the pudding, how would you rate double v bolt?

We "double" freaks would like to hear your views.

The other elephants took off at high speed. The elephant I shot was down for the count. There was no doubt in my mind. The PH had a 500 NE double as well. I thought about reloading as I ran up but didn't. In retrospect, I should have.

As far as which type of gun I like, I generally prefer the bolt guns. However, for elephants, DG in extremely thick areas or follow up of wounded DG, I would definitely prefer the double.
