Uganda: Elephants Destroy Crops in Kabale Robert Muhereza 5 May 2010 At least 12 elephants which reportedly escaped from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, have destroyed crops in fives villages in Ikumba Sub-county, Kabale District. The Ikumba Sub-county chairman, Mr Julius Barekye, on Monday identified the affected villages as Ndego, Nyakarambi, Katooma, Nyamabare and Kigumira. Destruction He said crops worth Shs20 million were destroyed by the elephants. Mr Barekye said attempts by game rangers to take the elephants back to the park over the weekend were futile. According to Mr Barekye, the affected villages are at risk of experiencing a food shortage. He called on the government to fence off the park land and compensate residents whose crops were destroyed.
