Help - I shipped an entire Cape Buff hide back after my last trip. Now, I am having it tanned "hair off". What would you do with it? Make a gun case? Make pillows? Make what??? I am low on my "creativity" today, so I need to tap the collective wisdom of AR.

Custom boots, belt, ammo carriers, purse for the Missus, wallet, knife case/sheath, rifle sling. If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

Try to decide what you're going to do with the leather before it's finished. The weight of the leather for certain projects is important. For example, I'm having my buff hide tanned to 4-5oz weight for some boots, per my bootmaker. It's easier for the tannery to skive it to a given weight during the process.

Have you considered making a pair of boots for me? One of these days someone is going to take me up on that offer. Might be today. You never know if you don't ask. Seriously, I have an Elephant hide guncase that is quite sharp. Boots are nice too. shoes briefcase belt bag of some sort, shell bag shell holder sling wallet Just start thinking of all the things made of leather. You will find something you like. Maybe new seats for your pickup?

Right on Wendell. I like your suggestion about new seats for the truck. If you're going to do that, though, make sure that you put the horns up front on the hood as well.

Dogcat, Like others here have suggested, I took my buff leather to the DSC and had Russell fit me for two pairs of boots, the Joe's PH and the short Kalahari PH. I still had enough leather left to allow my buddy to have a pair of PH's made for him too. Kinda cool to have footwear made from your own trophy. Now, if I could just get the darn things back from Russell! I really like the boot idea. I am going with that. Wendell - on the pick up truck seats - great idea, however, us Okies are more likely to cover our seats with towels or plastic.... The buff leather may cause my pack of dogs to act unbecomingly while riding down the road with their collective heads hanging out the window, drooling on my 1975 Ford F-150 in the general color of Bondo....

Just tryin to class you up a bit dawg. Buffalo leather seats come standard on most trucks and some cars in Texas. Given any more thought to my new boots?

Wendell, I have given it a lot of thought, just no action yet. Something about this thread runs familiar to me - like the old country song - "I bought the boots that just walked out on me" ...

Be careful now, you know how us Okies are.. One step at a time. THe hide is at the tannery now.. I talked to the guy and he said, considering your boot size, there may only be enough buff hide for 3 boots, so you will have to help arrange another buff hunt to get enough hide for "your" boot. That is, unless you want to go one-legged and hop after your buff. That may keep the mosquitoes off of you so you won't get sick again....
