Just a question for anyone who has sold, gifted, or transferred a firearm to their PH after a hunt. What permits are required and what is the procedure?

You need a US export permit. See Simpson website for the procedure. If you are exporting to Zimbabwe, no can do. Regards, Terry Msasi haogopi mwiba [A hunter is not afraid of thorns]

I left my 338 in RSA in 1974. My relatives and I have used it several times since, but I have given up on ever getting it home.

I left my side arm in Zim several years ago with my PH. I did take with me a copy of a page out of a catalog that showed price(the lowest I could find). The PH had to pay a 25% tax on the value of the gun. It all worked out real well. Global Sportsmen Outfitters, LLC Bob Cunningham 404-802-2500

Just so everyone knows, it is a violation of US law to give, sell, etc. any firearm or ammunition to any person in another country without an export permit. Regards, Terry Msasi haogopi mwiba [A hunter is not afraid of thorns]

Sounds like this would make giving your PH a rifle for a tip very difficult. Is it possible for them to get permission in their country to do this, and would that still be considered an "export" under our law?

It is still an "export" regardless of whether the PH has done all the paperwork in his country. In order for it to be legal, you have to have an export permit. Since April 17, 2002, the US has an arms embargo against Zimbabwe and you can't export to Zimbabwe under any circumstances (the government won't give you an export permit for Zimbabwe). Now what about finding a gun you love over there and bringing it back here? Possible? My wife is great, but I know some others who would like to tip the guide by leaving their significant other, any law barring that? Red

It really depends on which country you're in at the time and more importantly which country the PH lives in etc......however, most countries now make this almost impossible. In SA not only is it an offence for the PH to take a rifle as a gift but it's also an offence if the person who imports the rifle fails to export it on his way out. I had to turn down the offer of a rifle as a gift 3 times last year and I also twice had the offer of good double rifles as part payment for Buff hunts which I sadly had to refuse for the same reason. Oh well, shit happens in life and although the new firearms laws here are a real pain in the ass I can to some extent understand why they're doing it...... I just wish they had targeted the correct groups of firearm holders rather than go for the shotgun effect of get as many guns of the street as possible no matter who owns them.
