Gents: As many of you know I penned an article on Mark Sullivan for the African Hunter magazine. Part I was well received and I want to let you know part II is on AH's website. A part III will follow to conclude my story. Thanks all. I think this will go 5 pages ------------------------------ A mate of mine has just told me he's shagging his girlfriend and her twin. I said "How can you tell them apart?" He said "Her brother's got a moustache!"

I guess I fall into the category of never met him but still going to judge. first, great article he seems like an interesting guy however I do have reservations about this particular quote: "Do I like a one-shot, dead-in-your-tracks shot? Absolutely no. I hate it. The hunt is over before it ever begins." when we as hunters have to pepper the snot out of the game animal that to me isn't the ideal and isn't what we need to be promoting in the industry or promoting to those trying to shut down the industry. have I had animals that took more than one shot, absolutely. have I lost animals, yes. Am I proud of those scenarios? NOPE I understand buffalo are a whole different game, but I would say the goal no matter what the species should be "one shot, one kill" be prepared for the follow up but take aim like you have one

I spoke with a Moz PH at DSC about this very thing. He said he allowed a client to brain a Buffalo once. Never again. He said the proper way to kill a Buffalo is to shoot it in the shoulder and let it be a Buffalo...meaning, he is going to run a bit. Which way he runs, who knows? Usually away from the hunter, but not always. I don't know what Sullivan does, but I doubt he gut shoots them to get more action? I sure hope not! I have not hunted Buffalo (yet). But I felt like I could understand the PH's point about shooting the Buffalo in the shoulder and then responding accordingly when he "does his thing". 0351 USMC

I have never lost any buffalo I have shot in the head - and I have shot plenty of them that way. If it is not too far, and I always shoot them either in the head or neck. Never fails I know PHs prefer most clients not do this though, as any little screw up can mean a lot of hassle.

Shot a cow in the head with a 425WR. Was quite surprised too see it get up again. Not once but twice! FMJs slipped past the brain by millimetres.....

It's like anything else. You have KNOW where the brain is on a given species and you have to be able to visualize where it is at different angles in order to make the shot count. Naturally the target is a lot smaller than the heart/lung area and, as we see on many elephant hunting videos.......... the brain gets missed a lot. Likely to be the same for buff and anything else for that matter. Heck, even out in ranching country when it is time to put some beef in the freezer, I have observed ranchers and farmers miss the brain on cattle more times than I care to remember. And these are situations where there really isn't any pressure beyond muffing it in front of the onlookers.......... you aren't in any danger of being ground into the dirt. That is why PH's/guides prefer most hunters to take a shot that is most likely to be a sure thing and get the job done. ______________________________________________ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who are bereft of that gift.

My first buff hunt as a kid resulted in the same. Except it was much later and after we had cut a road in. I remember just hiding behind a tree for what seemed ages. Like I said I was a kid and knew jack shit back then. Now I like to shoot buffalo in the big parts.
