While flipping through the channels today between the NCAA BB games, auto races and hunting channels came upon another questionable African episode that bears some remarks. The show is titled Northwest Hunter, they were in RSA and not the Northwest for this one. Show host and (hunter ??) Pat Bower proceeded to shoot a Gemsbok from atop their hunting vehicle. The shooters were atop the vehicle not the Gemsbok. The group stopped prior to glass a herd of Gemsbok with the shooter at the ready from the cab top of the truck, PH said nothing in the group worth shooting, so off to find another group. Same thing plays out again, but this time the shooter fires from the vehicle and bags the Gemsbok. Lots of whooping a hollering, congrats all around. No attempt was ever made to dismount and stalk and shoot the animal from terra firma. Just another bad example of the way some shows are conducted and made out to be the "way it's done in Africa". The Safari Company was Global Safaris in RSA. And no, I don't know if they are SCI members or not!! Allen, didn't catch the last name, was the PH involved. Another Show that gets crossed off my list of watching. Anyone else see this sorry episode?? Larry Sellers SCI Life Member

Don't know about SCI, and don't know if it's the same company, but one Global Safaris auctioned off an RSA lion hunt (sic) in January at DSC. Larry, Japan TV programming, even cable, is very selective about what shows we can get, so I would not expect to see this type of program, but I quite agree with your concern. It is bad enough that they display such low sportsmanship, but to show it on a TV program where it portrays itself as a model of what hunting is like -- very bad for all of us. We should all condemn them. For goodness sake, get them out of the truck. Gemsboks can cover a lot of territory, but at least a short stalk from the truck is in order. I love to hunt and I like spot and stalk, however, have you tried it in the Kalahari? I have done it and I prefer it, but it's not easy. My health no longer allows it, especially in the mountains. I appreaciate the fact that it is allowed. SCI lifer NRA Patron DRSS DSC

Another recent episode of that show followed the host on a South African lion hunt...every bit as "canned", to my untrained eye, as the worst examples discussed here on AR. It made for some interesting afterdinner conversation that evening, none of which was enjoyable.
