Having just returned from Benin I suspect that many safaris are sold without a competent PH and therefore the hunt is very much self guided and reliant on local trackers. In my limited experience I would say that these individuals although good bushmen are not competent nor qualified.

Fine for the well equipped accomplished hunter who has hunted Africa and who is street wise.

But for rest of us is this a wise decision?

Assuming they the hunter is aware of the situation and not sold something else..

Wise decision in relation to what?

Personal safety? Possibly but that can be an issue even when hunting is not involved. Hunting without a guide in Alaska can be very dangerous and I have worked in parts of the world that would make Benin seem like visiting Paris.. Egypt or Nigeria for example...

Hunting Success? No doubt having a PH knowledgeable in that area would be an advantage but not necessary..

Hunting laws and proper game identification? This would be my concern but ultimately is it not the hunters responsibility if the law is violated?

If I spoke fluent French I would do a self-guided hunt. I think it would be a great adventure and after all - it's all about the adventure isn't it??

Thanks and good response. The adventure aspect could quickly turn to misadventure? Then it would be wise to have a competent mate along with you.

Something like that?

I remember once having to Mediavac a client out of a swamp and this took half a dozen responsible and competent individuals to make it happen. In the end I had to do everything myself which included rescue, medical, insurance etc. Not sure your non English speaking villager can do that when you are hurting and broken down in some remote backwater.

Absolutely true!

Two experiences hunters / adventurers that both speak fluent French might be a REALLY good idea!!

That means back to school. Sacrebleu...
Kinda similar here in MT.
Many out of state hunters think, elk are running everywhere.
Well, surprise! Not so...
You can go several times before you learn the country and habits of local game.
I'd go with good reputable PH, and I'm very confident and capable hunter, in very good physical condition, travel wise for decades and can track some.

Having a wife and kids that depend on me, I would insist on having a PH. You cannot tell me that your risk factor of harm or injury would not substantially rise by going self guided.

In the states yes, I always go self guided. However, being in another country whose laws, customs, and traditions I am not familiar with would be better spent with a PH IMO!

A sat phone is therefore invaluable. A booklet of simple French phrases is worthwhile or invite a French tart along as a translator?

But what to do with her when you are not hunting?

self guided hunts in a central African French speaking country can be a bit of a challenge( see my Cameroon hunt report from last april) but is certainly doable. mainly it just takes a positive, can-do attitude. i managed to pull it off at age 66 with absolutely no gear or clothes( thanks again Air France).....i did have a translator app on my iPhone, but never used it

Hmm.. If we coupled the "no clothes" with the "French Tart" it would make for an interesting hunt report.. :-)

Benin or Burkina is definitely on my bucket list and while it would be super cool to DIY, I would definitely use a qualified PH..

Wouldn't mind the French Tart though - have to write that into the hunt contract... :-)

Andrew,

You are just full of good ideas today! Ran the French tart idea past the wife. She is usually pretty supportive and understanding about my misadventures, but that -- would be a no.

From what I have hear, those who do take tarts with them to Africa, French or other nationalities, hardly;y ever do any hunting.

I somehow don't think this is what Andrew had in mind though.

40 years ago, being single and free with time, this is the sort of thing I might have gone on.

But, at 65 and a family to care for, one's ideas of coming back home safely takes precedence.

Seems like a great book -- anonymous of course -- "Ph's on Tarts" -- I've heard some hilarious stories and I'm sure it is just the tip of the iceberg.

Lavaca,

Inform her you were misinformed and I was referring to petit dessert. Something you can divulge in after dinner.

Saeed,

We were informed by a French PH that sadly this is the norm. Although he was not much better and confined to his chalet what could be best described as a school girl.

Andrew,

I have first hand knowledge of an older woman, who paid for the safari for her toyboy!

He wanted to shoot a lion, but was not prepared to pay for the bait animals.

He wasn't much of a shot either - I suppose we should have known that from what he had picked for a girl friend rotflmo

He was told to shoot a kudu cow for bait, missed it, and shot a bull standing 5 yards to the side!!

As you can imagine, the PH went ballistic clap

By the way, there are several single french lady hunters you could meet at the Salon de la Chasse this April. My competency ends at the introductions.

Andrew,

That would be a good plan except for the fact that my wife has been around too many PH's of British persuasion such that she knows exactly what a "tart" is -- and isn't.

But based on these responses, I still think an anonymous book would be hilarious.

There is a great story that's been around about two camps from different safari companies on opposite sides of the Ruaha River in the Selous, a couple of miles apart, the Russian "translator," sunbathing and the missing optics. Those involved know who you are. I've heard both sides, no pun intended and was there the next week. The stories from either side of the river are a bit different, but mesh well and make it even funnier.

That's it Andrew; I just came up with it. They are "translators" not "tarts".

Andrew,
depending on operators you may be able to find PHs in BF and Benin, will they have the same level as their easterner or southerner fellows i do not know how the ACP is giving the tag name those days ....

There are several stories about Russian Translators along the Ruaha. I followed them in a camp. Cameras are wonderful. This was before every phone had a camera. Taken on the sly they were.
