Crocodile Eats Mayuge Pupil
Abubaker Kirunda
26 February 2010

Mayuge — A primary seven pupil in Mayuge, who decided to try out his fishing skills during lunch time on Monday, suffered the misfortune of being grabbed and eaten by a crocodile.

The life of 17-year-old Muhammad Mugaga of Musubi Primary School came to a sudden end at Kitumbezi Landing Site in Bukaboli Sub-county, where he had gone with other pupils.

His colleagues looked on helplessly while the reptile carried Mugaga in its jaws and disappeared with him into the Lake Victoria waters.

The Southeastern Police Spokesman, Mr Samson Lubega, said on Tuesday that the boy's remains has not been recovered from the lake.

He said many people had been eaten by crocodiles in the district. He called for quick intervention by the government.

"The Uganda Wildlife Authority should put signposts warning people about the dangerous areas on the lakeshores, Mr Lubega said.

Crocodile Kills Fisherman
24 February 2010

Kampala — A fisherman was last week mauled by a crocodile at Musubi Beach on Lake Victoria. Muhamad Mugwere was fishing on the fateful night when the crocodile attacked him. Mugwere's colleagues said he was attacked when he went into the water to retrieve a net that was stuck on a rock.

"The beast carried him away as we helplessly cried for help," said Moses Wabwire, one of his friends.

Mugwere's mangled body was found on a papyrus shoreline the following morning, Wabwire said.

As usual with most of Kathi's posts -I just wish that the US media would pick up on such stories. It would help to give a balanced view of life in interior Africa. (I freely confess that after a month in Zimbabwe in May of '93, I left as a fervent croc hater. Fact.)
