Here is an excerpt (not written by me) reporting on use of the Rem 700 in 300 RUM in an ongoing military conflict in a certain country that has been the subject of media attention for the past six months.
"3. SPECOPS deployed several recently built 300 Rem Ultra Mags. 2 guns broke bedding at 95 and 101 rounds respectively. However first round hits were being on enemy soldiers at 1200 plus yards. Afghani's apparently think that no one can shoot that far that accurately and simply stand around looking to the sky when someone is hit thinking it must have been some type of aircraft weapon and subsequently leave themselves vulnerable to follow up shots. Snipers from all services are calling the environment in AF akin to a prairie dog shoot. It appears that we are finding out very quickly what is working and not."

500grains, Very amusing! Thank you! They need to do a better job on their bedding and carry on with the dog shooting. The 300 RUM with a 180 grain bullet at 3250 fps will be zeroed around 3" high at 100 yards and then be exactly 5 mils low at 1000 yards, and that is with no special long range scope base, just zeroed about 330 yards I reckon. Maybe a 500 yard zero would put them on the Afghan nose at -5 mils at 1200 yards? To do the calculations we need to know what bullet our snipers are using? Maybe a heavier tungsten cored target bullet would be more politically correct, environmentally friendly, you know.

Who knows. I have seen alot of things over the years that make me want to send a check to planned parenthood. The military was certainly no exception. It would be no dumber than taking the sand screens off choppers before going on a desert rescue mission. Cant imagine why they crash.

Guns to break, and war is hard on things like rifles aircraft tanks people and what have you. I don't what to really know what the troops are doing there, I can wait for the History Channel to tell me along with the books about it in about 20 years. As for a 1200 yard shot, Carlos Hathcock make a couple with an .30-06 and some matchkings in Viet-nam back in 1965. I would think that for the very few snipers that we have in AF. The hunting must be pretty good. What is the real story in all of this is how few soldiers that are engaged in combat. Once victroy is made, then those same soldiers and others will go about the task of helping that poor country back on its feet. I think that the work is going to take a generation or two.
