Hi. I would like to go back to Zim next year with a friend. He would like to hunt leopard/buffalo and some PG. I am just after another leopard, since the last one was destroyed when the warehouse in Bulawayo burnt down. Any suggestions from experienced Zim hunters? Thanks for helping. Roger

My wife & I hunted the Bubye Conservancy last summer for PG. I especially wanted a hyena and leopards frequently responded to our electronic caller. There's a young doctoral candidate from Oxford Univ. who's doing his dissertation on leopards in the Bubye. Their poulation is robust. The dugga boys are there as well. Good luck wherever you hunt!

I second the Bubye Valley very nice leopard and buff. Shot my lioness there in 2012, on my third hunt on the Bubye. Great plains game there also. Accommodations are excellent. You can't go wrong.

Phillip Smythe has a high success rate and hunts several areas in Zim. He's on AR, so you can PM him to get his thoughts. Also, Will Parks seems to have no problems shooting cats with Thierry Labat - both are on AR, and I'm sure would be happy to give you good info.

If you both want a leopard and a good buffalo, I would contact Thierry Labat (AR member) and get some ideas. Thierry is "The Cat Man" and has great success with buffalo, too. Just ask him what his record is and that will tell you alot. Whom ever you choose, best of luck. The only easy day is yesterday!

Lots of good buff and leopard in the Zambezi Valley, exportable tuskless ele, too. Chifuti and CMS would both be excellent choices.

I am not contradicting who the other guys are recommending for hunting with/where, but a little cautionary note... Multiple guys hunting cats out of the same camp is not optimal. If both of you are trying to get leopard at the same time, it could be rough, and it could strain your relationship. A few years back, I hunted in a place that had high cat success percentage, and there were always at least 2 and at times, 3 of us after Mr. Spots. None of us got one. One of the guys had a shot, but that was after everyone else had been done, and the PH was a little slow on deciding if it was a tom or not, and they lost his only chance. The only way I would do another hunt with multiple folks after cats, it would have to be a large concession and the ability to move camp if necessary.

Chapungu Safaris Charara area is thick with leopard. In two days of baiting we had 8 leopards on 12 baits. I shot mine on the third day, about 170 lbs. If you cant get a leopard there you cant get one anywhere. Good quantity of buffalo in the area, mine made the book. Some Sable, Eland, Zebra and Chobe Bushbuck in the upper area. Impala, hippo, crocs and such in the lower area opposite Kariba. Not sure if they have lion on qouta, although we saw plenty when we were there. Warren Thorne is the PH, outstanding fellow. Patricia Townsend takes care of everything else. Great camp and more importantly they live full time in Zimbabwe and will deal with you honestly. http://huntzim.com/ Pm me if you want more info

I dissagree with what you have to say about multiple cat hunters. I was hunting with my buddy and the 2 of us had about 6+ leopards males on bait and could have both killed our cats in less than 5 days. I got mine day 2 and My buddy held out till the end to see if he could get a monster and ended up killing a 7' 3" 168lb cat that he fed for 7 days as a last resort lol We both worked together stringing baits and when I killed mine he took over my bait run and had the pickings of whatever cat he wanted at my expense of paying for the bait already hanging. It worked real good for both of us. That being said we both had awesome PH's that knew cats well and we were in a good area

In general, good advice to consider, especially if the two hunters are not in the same group! If one is unsuccessful, human nature is sometimes to blame the presence of another hunter. "If that guy wasn't here, I would have shot that cat!." There are areas where doing 2 Leopard isn't an issue. In fact, many of the larger areas that have good success are ok. But, I think you mentioned that also in your post.

2 hunters means twice as many baits hanging and 2 PHs looking for leopard at the same time. I think that if the area has a population good enough to produce the number of cats being sold each year that it will be easy enough to do it. As for the cat fighting over who gets which cat, that is a valid concern. I would not hunt two cats out of the same camp at the same time. Cats are unpredictable enough at the best of times without starting out with restrictions.

Hunting 2 cats out of the same camp in a marginal area is not advisable. However, I have hunted 2 cats out of the same camp on many occasions with good success in what I would call good leopard areas. It's better to have 2 PHs and like some have commented, once one of the hunters has taken a leopard, then the second hunter has lots of baits. Location, location, location

Hi folks. Thanks for all the informations/recommondations. I talked to a guy that has a concession in Mozambique, so I probably should check that possibility too. Thanks Roger

Thierry asked that I post these. They are his last ten attempts for leopard spread over 2011 and 2012. For purposes of the present topic, at least two were conducted as 2x2 leopard - buffalo hunts from the same camp and area. Also included are some trail cam pics of cats that are still out there.
