Dear Sir,

First of all, let me wish you a happy new year in 2008. I wish you all the best to you and your family. We have never met, but I have much appreciation for a person who spends so much of his time and money, and contributes to the best hunting forum on the Internet. Let me finish by saying that, when a person you never met sends you by airmail a DVD-video copy of his 2006 safari without any questions whatsoever, that person can only be one thing, a true gentleman.

Now here are a few question I wanted to ask.

1) Did you ever shoot cape buffalo with the 270 Gr X-Bullet? or TSX?

2) If you did shoot buffalo with the 270 Gr, what velocity gave the ideal ( Best) penetration...?

3) Regarding the 300 Gr X-Bullets or TSX, which velocity gave you the best penetration in buffalo?

Thank you for you time Saeed,

Maurice

Maurice,

Thank you very much for your good wishes for the new year.

I wish you and your family all the best too.

We have only used the 300 grain original barnes X bullets in our 375/404.

We have tried these at various velocities, ranging from 2600 fps to 3140 fps.

We have found that the best penetration was probably at velocities of 2650-2750.

This seems to be the ideal velocity also with our own Walterhog bullets.

We have modified our Walterhog bullets by increasing the depth and diametr of the hollow point to reduce penetration.

This was done because most of the buffalo we hunt in Tanzania are in herds.

Again, this has worked very well, as our original Walterhogs would excit a buffalo unless shot lengthwise.

With our current bullets - deepr hollo point - it is very unliley that a bulletw ould go through a buffalo if he is at a quartering angle.

Thank you once again Saeed for a very detailed reply. I will save it and put it in my notes Wink

I imagine the 270 Barnes will abide to the same logic... 2650 FPS to 2750 FPS seems to be a happy medium...

Cheers everyone.
