Lion kills Chief Lwembe By KANYANTA KATONGO Zambia Daily Mail SENIOR Chief Lwembe of Nyimba has died after being attacked by a lion in his area. Chief Lwembe, 37, who was also MMD councillor for Lwembe ward, died after he was attacked on his way back to his ward. Nyimba district commissioner Alexander Miti confirmed this in an interview yesterday. “Chief Lwembe was heading to Nyimba town from his ward but when he reached the Luangwa River, he found that the boat which people use to cross the river had already gone. He waited but since it was getting late, Chief Lwembe decided to go back home,†Mr Miti said. He said Chief Lwembe was attacked by the lion around 20:00 hours, 53 kilometres away from his ward. Mr Miti said the chief was dragged into a nearby bush, 60 metres from the path where he was killed. “The Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) officers were sent to the area to investigate what had happened and confirmed that Chief Lwembe had been killed. They only found the skull,†he said. Mr Miti also said instructions had been given to kill the lions and that ZAWA officers were already on site to execute the mission. He urged the people of Nyimba to avoid unnecessary movements into the game management area. Chief Lwembe was buried yesterday, leaving behind a wife and four children. And ZAWA is offering eight species of wild animals for live sales to support the expanding game ranching industry. This is in line with Government’s citizenship empowerment policies. The sales will be done by auction in absentia and bidders are expected to make their own arrangements for capture. A total of 840 animals comprising Buffalo, Nile crocodile, Impala, Wildebeest, Zebra, Sable Antelope, Hartebeest and Tsesebe are targeted to be captured from selected national parks and game reserves. The animal capture will take place and be completed by September 1 this year. Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." | ||
