Six Rhinos Slaughtered in Zimbabwe Sanctuary The Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force on Wednesday reported that at least six rhinos were poached in a game sanctuary in the north of the country. It is believed that the animals were rare white rhinos, but very little information was available on the incident. The independent body said the three remaining rhinos at Nyamaneche Game Sanctuary were due to be relocated to a place of safety. The task force’s chairman Johnny Rodrigues said he believed a Chinese firm was mining chrome in this ecologically pristine area. If these reports were true, it would be a huge blow to conservation efforts in the country, which has fewer than 300 white rhinos. Zimbabwe’s population of black and white rhinos was put at 3,000 in the 1980s, but it has since been revised to less than a quarter of that figure.
