The packing list found on hunting reports is complete and extensive for the trip as a whole.

I want to know what you take with you when it is early morning and the PH says we need to follow these buffalo tracks. Also how and where do you carry the items?

Well I do not carry a camera or a GPS, but I have managed well with some matches, a compass, water, two ammo pouches filled 10 rounds each, one rifle, and a lot of money.

375 H&H bolt or 500/416 double rifle.

ammo belt with knife and 10 to 20 extra rounds.

binoculars Swarovski 10X42

Camelbak water carrier with 2 flashlights, light stick, lighter, GPS, duct tape, camera and first aid kit.

I am wearing the ammo belt and usually the binos on a Crooked Horn harness. In my pockets I have chapstick, small Swiss Army knife, some hard candy and enough Skoal for a day or two.

Although it may never happen again, having been lost at night in Mozambique with 3 stoned natives with no water, no GPS and only 1 Surefire light and a heck of a long walk out; I tend to carry a bit more stuff than others. If this tiny extra weight is going to make or break me physically, perhaps I need a bit more exercise before I leave on my trip.

I carry my .470 double on the shoulder (or at port in the thick stuff). Give a tracker my scoped .375 (for possible shots at plains game). Ten rounds of soft and solid for the .470 and five rounds of soft for the .375 on my belt. Binos on a strap around my neck under off side arm. Small Surefire in my back pocket. Hat and gloves.

I always check to make sure one of the trackers has water. Always do this, even on a quick hop out of the truck "just to take a quick look".

I carry:
1) Double rifle
2) 12 rounds of ammo, 10 solids in a cartridge belt. Maybe one or two extra softs, one per pocket.
3) Gerber multi tool on ammo belt
4) Thin credit card sized digital camera on ammo belt.
5) Hard candy in pocket
6) Tin of skoal in back pocket
7) Occasionally, 1/4 roll of Charmin in back pocket.

I wear a ball cap. Light weight shirt and shorts.

Trackers carry:
1) Water
2) Extra contacts lenses and eye drops, cleaner
3) Small package of baby wipes
4) blister kit of a couple of bandaids, tape, Gold Bonds powder.
5) 2 small vails of sunscreen and bug juice, which I don't use at all, but for just in case.
6) Often, my 375H&H with empty chamber, soft followed by three solids in magazine, plus five rounds extra each totaling five extra solids and five extra soft.

I can suffer chafing between my legs from the short's inseams. To avoid this I use an old rugby trick and wear light weight, black running tights under my shorts. Eliminates friction and promotes evaporation.

If the hump looks to be a long one I might throw an extra pair of fresh socks in the trackers kit.

Perry,

I'm surprised your the only one to mention a GPS...Its certainly something I would take if I were hunting anywhere reasonably remote...

In DG country, getting seperated from the PH and his staff must be a real possibility at times, not to mention if the PH gets put out of action for any reason...

Regards,

Pete

.458 Lott
20 rds. Ammo, including what’s in rifle and on culling belt
Compact binos
Small belt pouch with cough drops, wet-wipes, small sunscreen & bug juice, multi-tool, small camera, LED headlamp, 2 days of medication, Quick-Clot trauma kit. Belt pouch weighs a little over 2 lbs. I’m a heart patient, and bleeding can quickly turn into a life-threatening event for me.

Trousers pockets : usually nothing, it could interfere when running is necessary.
