Does anyone know of a source for something in writing regarding the duties/responsibilities of PH's?

Anything out there regarding the same issues with clients?

A thought would be PHASA or one of the other PH associations for Zim/, etc. bewildered

Thanks wave

I am only mentioning what is the rule in RSA. We have outfitters and ph's. Often you will find that the outfitter and the ph is the same person

Outfitters duties
He arrange and organises the hunt for the client.
He must supply the hunting area.
He must enter in a written contract with the client setting out, the animals that may be hunted, services and facilities that will be provided.
He is responsible for the supply of the camp and amenities
He is responsible to supply a qualified and good ph
He makes sure that he gets the relevant permits to enable the client to hunt the species that he wants to hunt.
He is responsible to get the clients trophy to the taxidermist

PH
He is responsible for the running of the camp
He manage the staff in in the camp
He accompanies the client in the bush and ensures that the client gets the best possible trophy.
He must inform the client of the quality of the trophy

That is the basics.
In RSA a copy of the contract and the huntingregister must be sent to the provincial nature conservation department.

There are a lot more rules on the outfitterthat descibes every detail of the services he must render. A foreign hunter is also not allowed to stay on a hunting concession that is notapproved by nature conservation. The camp must be to a certain standard before they will aprove it.

Hope it helped.
He is responsible for the safety of the client

RHSim,

I want to add some to what Jaco said:
Outfitter: He makes the money! Big Grin
Professional Hunter: Works his arse off for peanuts salary from the Outfitter. thumbdown But by working his arse off well he can get a good tip from the client. thumb

If you wish and ask, I'll send you a PM on what I expect from PH's working on a freelance basis for me. It gives my views on PH shooting and a few more aspects.

In good hunting.

After a few years of participation on forums, I have learned that:

One can cure:

Lack of knowledge – by instruction. Lack of skills – by practice. Lack of experience – by time doing it.

One cannot cure:

Stupidity – nothing helps! Anti hunting sentiments – nothing helps! Put-‘n-Take Outfitters – money rules!

My very long ago ancestors needed and loved to eat meat. Today I still hunt!

Appreciate the responses.

Besides the obvious duties they are required to perform and knowing that most Ph's go through demanding schooling/training to become licensed/certified, the thought occurred to me that there might be some kind of PH handbook or manual.

Maybe not, but I am without a doubt very impressed with 99.9% of the PH's I have met and had the pleasure to hunt with and learn more than of few things from their expertise.

As to clients, all I know is what I have witnessed for myself...most PH's will have a good talk with clients and lay out the guidelines for the hunt and the duties of each memeber of the staff (trackers/skinners/drivers, etc.)

I want to be better informed for my third hunt.

Generally the client is responsible to:

1. Pay the agreed amount.

2. Be in good enough shape to keep up.

3. Handle his rifle safely and shoot accurately when told to do so.

4. Leave a tip.

Amendment to 4. Leave a (very good) tip.

Louis.

I don't ever really need to advertize or in any way look for a freelance PH to work for me. I know enough good guys that have worker for or with me before to fill my needs. But sometimes a concession comes with the services of a PH included, as you well know this is mostly the case where the game farm manager is also a PH. In these cases I send the guy a document "Expectations on Conduct while Working for Andrew McLaren Safaris as a Freelance Professional Hunter" to form the basis of our agreement.

I've e-mailed a copy of this to you.
