Lions maul Nyimba man By Christopher Miti in Chipata and Agness Changala in Lusaka Fri 05 Aug. 2011, 13:59 CAT LIONS have killed and eaten a 50-year-old man in chieftainess Mwape’s area in Nyimba district. Siniyopa Mumba, becomes the second person to have been eaten by lions in the last two months in chieftainess Mwape’s area while two others were attacked over the same period. Nyimba district commissioner Colonel Jeremiah Mbawe who had rushed to the scene with some security officers on July 28 confirmed the incident. Col Mbawe said the deceased was almost completely eaten and that only part of his skull was found. And sources in the area said the deceased was from chief Sandwe’s area in Petauke and only went to chieftainess Mwape’s area in search of traditional medicine for his wife who had been sick for two years. “While in Mwape area, the deceased who was in the company of a traditional doctor, Levi Tembo, went to drink beer at Madoma village. After getting drunk at midnight, they headed towards Nyakolwe Game Ranch which was a wrong direction. At some point the deceased went to answer the call of nature and Tembo continued with the journey. It was at this point that Tembo was attacked by the lion but he managed to run away in his drunken state,” the source said. “When Tembo reached a nearby village people were shocked that he was coming from a direction where the lions had gone when they chased by the villagers when they attempted to kill goats. After a while, people heard a person shouting for help and it was during that time that they realised that Mumba had been attacked by the lions.” The source said the people who rushed to the area only found a skull and some bones at the scene. Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) in conjunction with a professional hunter at Nyakolwe have since killed the three marauding lions. The remains of the deceased have since been buried in chieftainess Mwape’s area. Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." | ||
