yes a MP5K is a folding stock short barreled rifle per federal law and I paid the federal taxes on the gun and the suppressor and with the proper 110 gr German machine gun ammunition it will shoot threw about any floor found an most homes , then again no one with proper training is even going to try to shoot someone in the basement from the bedroom if you can not testify you was in fear for your life you couldn't shoot someone here in KS but that being said my gun room is next to my bedroom in in there is my SWAT gear with an AR10t 16inch barrel 308 loaded with Hornady 165gr Tap ammo right on top. Smiler Cool

Killed enough deer with a 5.56mm to know it's not the ideal deer rifle but it does make a mess internally, probably enough to convince a bad guy to go somewhere else. Everyone can shoot one from the 100 pound lady to the 6'8" 350# exlinebacker. Ammo is relatively cheap and available as are magazine and various tactical gadgets (some of dubious tactical worth).

About the only thing the .223/5.56 doesn't do well is shoot into/thru vehicles but I've shot up enough junk cars to know it's better than any handgun and does well enough to make things hot even behind a vehicle.

MFD, I know who you're talking about. Nice to have someone who tests all the new stuff on his dime. hilbily

Make mine a M4gery 16" carbine with a free float tube lined with rails. Iron sights and Eotech along with a white light will do for me, I don't need the stealth can opener. Cool

I like the term "Sport Utility Rifle".

Another choice I use a fair amount is a Winchester 44 Mag Trapper.

Especially on trips that involve hunting or camping, as I always have a 44 Mag handgun with me as well.

It is easy to carry and handle, and for the wife to use as well.

In bear country, with the right ammo it is plenty good for protection.

It is also good for a road gun as it shoots through metal pretty good too...

Out to 100 yards it is very effective.

Also with its non military/black rifle look, it does not draw much attention...

I have to say that I am a little concerned by some of the responses. If you are going to be in a life threatening, POTENTIALLY LIFE ENDING (possibly mentally, depending on the level of violation), confrontation why not be loaded for bear. When we hit the woods we are loaded for worst case scenario looking for table fair, how much more important is the life and safety of yourself and the ones you love. To hell with the trial. So you only have one 38 spl loaded with swc so a jury doesn't think your waiting for a confrontation while on the other hand your wife/daughter is never the same after being raped in your house. We live in a BRUTAL world where the bad guys have no conscience and do not think twice about doing heinous things to you and your loved ones. You law enforcement guys back me up or correct me if I'm wrong about this.

The best ppr is the one you are most DEADLY with!!!! Now put a BRIGHT, TACTICAL light on it. Get those hot hand loads out of it, they are not as reliable as quality factory ammo (get over it, that is fact). Put the best hollow point/expanding point they offer for your caliber of choice and PRACTICE!!!! Oh yea I forgot to mention PRACTICE!!!! Did I mention PRACTICING? PRACTICE!!!!! Depending on where you live, level of hostility you live around, more than one gun in the house in more than one location could be a good idea.

If shtf don't be a hero. Round up the family, take up a defensive position and call in the calvary. They are trained to deal with the threat, you are NOT.

I'm secluded... so If someone's in the house I'm not going to assume they're lost and looking for a phone book. Secondly, altho I've got a bright light on the PPR, PPP. PPS and PPSS (personal protection Sling-shot) I'm not convinced it's a good idea. If I was a bad guy, I'd aim for the bright light and personally, I don't need a light to get around my house after dark. Soooo, Deep penetration, some range, the advantage of situational awareness, along with NRA stickers near the doors... I hope I never find out what works best.

I "heart" the Calvary, but I'd never trust my family's life to them. There's a (not so) humorous saying "When seconds count the police are only minutes away...

I must say that having a light on a PPGun is a must have.

You positively need to identify a threat, before you shoot it.

I cannot think of any SWAT Team or Hostage Rescue Team, or any SPEC OPS Warefare Team, that does not have lights on their guns....

Collins,

You'd be surprised how much a weapon mounted light "educates" some people. I've seen confirmed drug dealers who remember to finish their lines with "sir" just like their momma taught them. Cool

A good light is disorienting and you know there's a world of hurt being held back by 4# of trigger pull. Big Grin

My LOW Budget choice,
(your going to laugh)

French MAS 49/56 with converted FAL mags.
For under $500 You have an UGLY weapon system that can hang in there with any regular M1-A.

I use shotguns my self.

A shotgun up close is a good choice.

I have done many a shotgun robbery stakeout...

But for most other situations the shotgun does not hold enough ammo for me....

Just to slightly hijack the thread.

If a semi auto is out of the question would you prefer a lever gun, pump shotgun, double barrel or something else?

I've had a couple of pistol caliber lever guns but I'm really taken with my Marlin Guide Gun in .45/70.

My Model 1100 12 gauge mag has a nine-shot extended magazine tube, and is loaded with Number Four Buck. By time I empty it I will be like McCauley Culkin: "Home Alone".

While a pump shotgun is very handy up close...

When I want a Low profile PPR, I use my Winchester Trapper in 44 Mag. I have used it a LOT.

There are no flies on a 44 Mag Marlin either.

I like it better than a 30/30 for a PPR because it holds more bullets, and I also always carry a 44 Mag handgun when on a hunting trip.

For bear protection a 44 Mag with the right bullets is far superior to a 30/30.

A Marlin Guide Gun is a most excellent rifle.

My brother has one [I used to have a full sized rifle, but I prefer the Guide gun].

In the Field, the 45/70 with proper loads is quite a bit more powerful than the 44 Mag...

As a PPR it holds less rounds...

But with a stock butt cuff, and or a cartridge belt with extra ammo, I would not have a problem carrying it as a PPR on the road, or in the field.
