Anyone shooting the 458 these days? I was wanting a conversion kit but don't know with the current political climate if I can afford one. I also noticed the www.458socomforum.com was down last I looked. Packy

it is a great round in both a ar platform or a bolt gun.I have one of each with a can comeing, it is a fun round. Make sure you get a pistol lengh gas tube not a middy. You will be able to shoot H110 and get max volicity.

i have one in an ar platform. it is a very neat gun when you show up at the range. it also makes a great hunting round, but why shouldn't it, the 45-70 been killing things for years and the 458 is close enough.

I just got into putting a .458 Socom together a couple weeks ago and had my first range trip with it yesterday.

I bought a Rock River upper half at a local gun show and been gathering most everything else on-line. Went with Redding dies and have been getting brass gathered from different sources. Bullets seem to be the easiest to obtain, particularly the Hornady 325-grain FTX bullets.

I started out with moderate loads using Re7. Found nothing particularly remarkable in the reloading process of the cartridge.

Went to the range for the test run and zeroing the scope I mounted. It cycled fine and I found the felt recoil milder than I expected, (less than the 30-06 I also took to the range). Was very pleased when it printed a 1-inch (3-shot) group at 100 yards.

I'm still in the early dating phase with this project but the first date went quite well.

MATT

I have been shooting a Wilson Combat 458 SOCOM.

It is a great cartridge, and in a lightweight AR platform a joy to carry and use.

This last deer season I killed 2 deer, one at 141 yards, the other at 131 yards. four pigs, 3 coyotes, a bobcat, and a turkey.

I used the 325 Hornady FTX, the 300gr Hornady HP, and the Remington 300 HP [I was testing bullets].

All worked good, but the 325 FTX is my favorite.

My load is 32gr of H-110.

Thanks for the load. I have 300 gr Winchester Ballistic Silvertips. The 325 gr FTXs are on sale at Midway. I may see if they are really available or a misprint.

The Midway 'Sale' price on the FTX's are ~two bucks more than the everyday price at Graf & Sons. Plus Graf & Sons shipping works out to be cheaper.

FWIW, I recently placed several orders from different on-line sources for items getting my Socom up and running. The only one I'm still waiting on is Midway. It's been an overall disappointing experience as they've really given me the run-around. Billed my credit card quite quickly however.
