I need your advice of a varmint rifle on an AR platform.

Here is where I am confused -

1. I like the adjustable stock so my sons and I can shoot it together.

2. Do I need a 20" barrel for accuracy reasons?

3. Do I need the "heavier" varmint barrel for accuracy reasons?

I would like to get one that has the adjustable stock, rail system for the scope and with an 18 to 20" barrel. Can I do this with a factory ordered gun? I like Rock River, Stag and the new Remington types.

Thanks for the help.

The Rock River Predator Pursuit is worth a look-not sure if you can get it with a telestock though.

You are going to have to buy a varmint AR and replace the stock and buffer tube yourself.

Or just buy a varmint upper and a complete lower that already is outfitted with a collapsible stock.

RRA predator pursuit works for me - but it comes with a fixed stock. I replaced mine with a Magpul PRS adjustable stock.

picture is 5 rounds at 100 yards - Privi 75 gr. I think there are 16" or 18" barrels that can do the same, and probably thinner ones that can do the same.

20" gives a bit higher velocity. And the heavier barrel feels better, a bit more stable for me. I think you need to focus on brand, twist, and chamber. The RRA has a wylde chamber, which is a bit tighter than the basic military - seems to work. it is also 1 in 8" twist. for the heavier (>55 gr) projectiles, you want faster twist.

I have not tried a lot of other ammo, but know the privi 75 gr works better than 55-gr ball.

My Bushmaster flattop is much more accurate than I expected. Using Hornady 55 V-Max ammo 3 shot groups at 100 yds usually measure 0.25 inches. The only change was replacing the trigger with a Jewell adjusted to a single stage. The barrel is 24 inches. I have considered replacing the butstock with a skelton buttstock.Possibly a shorter barrel?
This rifle shoots!

My thoughts too on buying the lower and upper seperately.

Also, the barrel doesn't need to be heavy to be accurate. The most accurate AR I've ever owned has a light barrel. It's good for about 5 shots and then the barrel needs to cool or the groups start to open up.

dogcat, The AR platform is one of the most, if not the most customizable rifles created. Accuracy is not dependent upon barrel length, but the range you wish to shoot to accurately will have a larger influence on your selection.

The "heavier" barrel would be desirable if extended strings of fire were to happen (like Pdog shootin!) But for Eastern woodchuck ot western marmots... not so.

The rail for the scope is actually a Flat top model, and the single thing you would want is a free float handguard. The RRA varmit's shoot very well, three of my shooting companions shoot theirs on average about .6 MOA with good handloads.

One little known variation is the Colt model CR6724. 24" 1 in 9 twist stainless freefloat enhanced trigger flattop, comes with a useable 1" scope mount and small magazine, sling etc.

Got my second one this past January for $1150. NIB.

Here's a 300 yard group using TAC and 77 MAtchkings...

Good luck and good shooting.

Dogcat,

Rock River Arms Predator Pursuit. You will not be disappointed!

I have 2 RRA's a 223 and a 308.

20" Barrel is fine, my friend has an 18" barrel, it is accurate! I have a 20" on my 223 and an 18 on teh 308 ... and I jsut bought a DPMS 308 Upper, 20" Bull barrel, free float hand guard ... sorry, I drifted into dreamland again.

Yes, get the RRA bull barreled Predator class rifle.
