I recently bought from ammunitiontogo.com and sportsmansguide.com, the Russian Silver Bear stuff. I've used cheaperthandirt.com too. It takes about 10 days to get it they are so busy. You might look on Gunbroker.com too.

Where are you?
Carter's Country in Houston, Texas had 1000/$545.00 last week...not sure how long this price will last.

Is that correct? $.89 apiece? Wow! I haven't bought any in a long time. I had no idea it had gotten that expensive.

Yeah, they are pretty proud of it. But hell, they got it in stock and ready to ship.

I've got 2 AR-15's in .223 but they're both target type rifles so I reload for them. A few months back I bought a S&W M4 style AR chambered in 5.45X39. It's a fantastic "plinking" rifle and I was able to get the ammo for $0.12 apiece. You might want to look into it. You could almost save enough on a 1000 rounds of ammo to pay cash for the rifle.

At that price they are going to keep it in stock.

Makes you wonder if/when Iraq-Afghanistan ends, will there be a flood of surplus ammo that the gov. wants to get rid of via CMP and other resources...

I paid 185.00 + 15.00 shipping for PMC 500 round lots a month ago. I would agree that 5.45 is the way to go. 138.00 for 1080 rounds shipped. Start buying cases and the price drops. I bought a AK74 about 2.5 years ago, $249.00. Well over 500.00 now. I picked up a flat top side mount for $29.00 and a red dot for $69.00 on sale. Great plinker and 100 yard Coyote rifle. .223 AK mags fit, but only hold 4 which is fine for hunting.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the difference between 5.45 and .223? And where did you find such deals? Thanks

5.45X39 is a Russian cartridge and will not work in a regular AR-15. Recently Bulgaria, a former Combloc nation has seen the light and converted over to our NATO 5.56X45 round. They have warehouses full of this 5.45X39 communist stuff and have been selling it to US distributors for the past few years.

S&W saw a golden opportunity and has chambered an AR-15 that shoots this stuff. With the price of ammunition and "patriot" rifles skyrocketing I saw a golden opportunity and sold an AK-47 and small supply of 7.62X39 ammo and made enough to purchase one of those S&W M4 clones in 5.45X39 and 8640 rounds of ammo. I've found the ammo to be dirty but reasonably accurate. It has corrosive primers so you need to clean after you shoot.

It's so fun just to go plinking and not worry about how much it's costing. I got mine for $.12 a piece!

Your rifle is politically incorrect, TC. Probably why I like it and that you own it...

That 5.45 stuff is deadly shit. It tumbles instantly upon impact, ripping the shit out of whatever soft tissue it hits. It's a very intelligently-designed round. Them Russkis can be pretty smart sometimes...

Yeah, it has all the evil features. They don't even make a low capacity magazine for it thumb

For good ammo to have around find some Winchester 55 gr ball or Federal 55 gr ball.

Federal 62gr ball shoots good as well.

If you want some soft point or hollow point ammo get some Black Hills ammo.
